Scott, I suppose 'no problem' is not much help, but on my system, Vista Home Premium, ATI 1650 GPU and latest driver, the brightness slider works as it should as well as the enhance contrast checkbox in 2D mode. In 3D mode, the slider does not have an effect. (That would be nice!) I cannot produce a dark gray shade however with the slider; it's aways some degree of white as I would expect.

Feature Requests / editable HTML imagemap template?
« on: May 07, 2007, 07:28:33 AM »
Krein, maybe I had mentioned this suggestion before and have forgotten, but how about having the html image map feature refer or have the option of refering to a template that one can edit with an html editor?

The html imagemap is a hidden gem. It's absolutely great for documentation and it saves having to write a very large amount of text explaining where and when pictures were taken, the surrounding geography, etc.

It would be nice to be able to create several custom templates that would be tailored to specific audiences. Unnecessary info, such as the elevation profile when the track is unimportant can cause confusion. ('Why is this here' some may ask.)

It's possible to edit the html file after generation, but heck, I'm lazy!

Krein, I think the DXT1 option is well worth it; for those who don't want to use it, it can just be turned off.

Have you thought more about creating a converter? If so, when might it be available? I'm wondering whether or not I should just start over and rebuild my map data file. Maybe if I use the 'load maps' tool and let it run overnight.....

Archived - Feedback and Comments / HTTP persistent connection option
« on: April 07, 2007, 09:09:44 AM »
Hi Krein,

I wonder if you could elaborate on the 'persistent connection' option under preferences>internet.

With this option enabled (by default as I remember) recently I have found that right after opening TF, downloads are very fast, but within a minute or so, often the dowloading slows to a stop. A bit later TF will tell me that it cannot connect with the server.

I've been experimenting with this feature off - no persistent connections - and the problem seems to be solved. It's as if the server, after briefly handling my TCP requests on a persistent connection, has put remaining requests at the bottom of its to-do list.   ':p'

I found this explantion of persistent connections helpful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_persistent_connections

And I wondered about this: "According to RFC 2616, a single-user client should not maintain more than 2 connections with any server or proxy."

I've been using anywhere between 6 and 30 connections - still experimenting. Could it be that the server might be trying to 'encourage' compliance with the reccomendation?

More detail about the internet options would be great!

Fixed crash when coming back from suspend/hibernate

Krein, my Vista machine crashed resuming from 'sleep' while TF was running. Maybe something special about Vista.

When you attempt to restart in Vista after this sort of crash, it first tries to 'resume' exactly where it left off, but in this case, that freezes with a black screen. Then you have to hold the power key down a second time and choose the correct restart option as the system boots.

Hope you can find the issue. Till then, I'll be sure to close TF immediately if I'm not using it.

If there is enough interest, I will write a routine to convert map files downloaded before texture compression.  I'm OK with starting from scratch in order to get the speed/memory benefits, but others may have large map collections worth hanging on to.

Hi Krein, I'll vote for a converter. I've just tried 3.03; no problems to report.

I had some success using GPSBabel to convert .TPO files to .GPX.  I don't know which version of Topo! these .TPO files came from, but it worked fairly well.

Did the .TPO format change in recent versions?  I know the .tpo capability was only recently added.

Krein, up through version 2.7.x, Topo! used two file formats; .tpo for the user generated graphics on the base map, and .tpg for waypoints.  From version 3 on, .tpo files contain the waypoins; no need for .tpg.

I just downloaded the newest version of GPS Babel (nov 06) and I see that it now can use .tpo versions 3.x and 4.x as input. So right, GPS Babel is an option to convert Topo! files to .gpx, except I think it's only going to transfer the waypoints. If you have simply drawn a track in Topo!, that would not be converted unless you made a GPS route of it too.

My problem is the opposite conversion; TF files to Topo! As I already have all the waypoints in TF, all I want to do is trace the gps'd route in Topo! without the waypoints. Topo! gives you this option when you download from a GPS. I have not figured out a way to do this using only software coversions.

This solution is rather crude... but it works, both ways; gpx to Topo! and the reverse. So far I have not found a more convenient way to get a track from TF to Topo! Topo! can import .gpx waypoints, but not tracks it seams.

But to this question, Topo to TF: Have Topo! create a route for any track you would like to transfer, hook the gps up, export the track or waypoints to the gps, and then import the the stuff in the GPS into TF.

Did I mention crude?   ':p'

It works better going from TF to Topo! Use the active directory in the GPS, because it can store a huge number of points, as opposed to the saved tracks directory.

I'm waiting for an easy to use converter. Last time I checked, GPS Babel could not do Topo version 4.x

Krein,

A further report now that I've had a chance to play with the 3.0 release version. So far, everything I've tested works. The user maps plus the usual features I use. Just one little issue that I previously mentioned; the color swatch for each loaded track file is a series of upside down 'L's.

I've got the zooming smoothness cranked up to 10 (the max) and the tile set preference set say 80% to the left and not even a hint of slowdown. Wow! You are gonna have to think about extending the range on the zooming smoothness.  '<img'>

I think TF has just been waiting for better hardware. Now it's here. It's soooooo nice.

One thought; would it be possible to click a button, or perhaps allow the option of loading the DEM tracks for the area you are viewing in the background? This to allow you to keep working, and maybe preload the DEM data without having the screen freeze while the stuff loads. Maybe even an option to load X, Y and Z dem files in the background after startup. The current behavior keeps me from using the 3D until I really want it because my DEM stash is quite large.

Krein,

Have not been able to test the new features till now, I think because although I was running DX 9 my old vid card would only support DX 8.  So I just put it off.

I just finished my new build (Intel E6600, Raedon 1650 pro, Asus P5B E using AHCI mode with Seagate NCQ enabled drives) and have Vista installed. New, but mid level stuff. This just so I could really enjoy TF. '<img'>

I was expecting a significant improvement in the performance of TF, but all I can say on first look is that the results are *stunning*. You sort'a have to see it to appreciate it.

Haven't tried to break anything yet, but I have noticed that that in the files display at the bottom of the window, the color for the track is a series of small 'L's.

I'll test more when I get the computer setup finalized

Krein, a minor suggestion but it is something I find irritating. As far as I know, there is no 1 meter topo, and thus no 1 meter combo, at least for my area. Even though I have unchecked the combo 1 meter box in the tile set preferences, when I toggle through the  1 meter tile sets using the 'a' key and come to the combo, I see a blank page with the 'downloading' on the tiles. It would be great to just skip this if it is not enabled, because --- well I'm never quite sure if I've toggled to something that really will be downloaded or not.  '<img'>

I have to toggle through again to find out. Now if my memory was better....  ':p'

Just browsing and came across this:

Could the 3D features in TF be speeded up with this method?

http://www.okino.com/conv/imp_dem.htm

"Features of the DEM Converter:

DEM datasets typically contain 60000 or more quadrilateral polygons, or 1200000 triangles (for a 258x258 resolution sample; the maximum DEM dataset size if 2050x2050 which would result in 4.2 million quadrilaterals or 8.4 million triangles). This is an enormous number of polygons for most 3d rendering programs so this DEM converter incorporates two unique options to overcome this problem:

The converter can skip over samples in the dataset so that only every n-th sample is used. Rather than importing 258x258 samples, the converter imports 51x51 samples (for a skip factor of 5) which results in only 2601 quadrilateral polygons. [don't think this one would be that useful. LR]

Rather than store the entire DEM dataset in single object, the DEM converter breaks up the data into multiple smaller objects with a common parent. This has shown to be an effective method to speeding up the wireframe redraws of the DEM data (by a factor of 2 or 3), and makes interactive user movement of a 3d camera much faster since each sub-object is only a few hundred polygons. In addition, certain rendering programs (such as Okino's NuGraf renderer) use much less memory when many smaller objects are used rather than one large object with many polygons. By default each sub-object stores a maximum of 900 polygons; contrast this with other converters which lump all 120,000 polygons into a single object - few renderers will be able to render such a large object.

A default 3d camera is added to the scene which views the DEM data from a pleasing angle.

u/v texture coordinates are added to the imported data so that a bitmap image can be easily draped over the DEM data.

The converter creates smoothed vertex normals for the DEM data so that it will appear to be smooth when rendered. "

Grant,

You can name DEM files any way you like, as long as you keep the .dem extension. As soon as you copy them to the TF folder, TF will take care of the rest. I don't know which file TF will pick however when DEM areas overlap. Not an issue if all are the same resolution. If you have special DEM files at say the highest resolution and want to be sure that TF uses these files, the only way I've found is to temporarily put any overlapping files in some other folder.

One way to solve the icon problem might be to package them in a file that could be edited by the user with a photo editor. You can do this with NGS Topo! for example.

Also, it would be a big help if one could delete .gpx files directly from TF. I have a huge collection of them, many not needed (planning files, etc.) and currently I have to review them and then pencil down which ones to delete, and later delete them. OK, that's what I should do --- but I'm too lazy.  ':p'

Beta Testing / Min speed in 2.93 beta
« on: August 22, 2006, 08:19:49 AM »
Krein, just tried out the new 2.93 beta; for hiking at least the 'minimum speed to be moving' feature is really slick! I haven't yet fiddled with different settings, but first tryout with max speed set to 3 and the min set to .5 mph really showed the sort of detail I was hoping for. You know, when I was dogging it, and when not.   '<img'>  And exactly where in relation to the trail grade.

Larry

Ps: sayyyyy, grade vs. speed - just asking for an equation (which I think you already have). An equation that could then be used to color code the track insead of speed. You could call it the 'am I lazy or what?' shading.

I can see some advantages of having it regenerate without going all the way to the boundary, but it also might lead to more unintended regens and confusing behavior.  Do you see what I mean?

I already end up unintentionally moving off the model sometimes and wishing it didn't regenerate and change my zoom / position settings.

Sorry about the error message from the board here, it's from the emails that it is trying to send out.  As you saw, the posts go through even with the error message.  The notification emails just aren't working.  Something's amiss on our server...

Krein, right - I suppose for some purposes one would not want the map to regenerate too frequently. But I'm not quite sure about the reference to changing zoom and position settings on regen. On my computer if I move the map a small amout and then hit R, it just fills in a bit around one edge of the scene and cuts the other. No change in zoom.

If there is some sort of hotspot under the blue ball that triggers regen, then you might get the best of both worlds by having the size adjustable; increase the size and the map would regen with just a little movement, 'negative' sizes would let the blue ball go off the map before regen.

As computing horsepower goes up, it's less and less of a pain to have the map regenerate frequently. When I zoom down to 1 meter res pics for route planning in the mountains, frequent regens helps keep me oriented. So one more request to add to the thousands you already have!   '<img'>

There is an easy way to read the elevation from the screen. Press the 3D button at the top, then move the screen around until the blue ball or center is where you want the elevation.

Great tip Steve,

Krein, while I think of it, would it be possible to have the 3D map regenerate 'sooner' when you move it around? That is, without having to move it until the blue ball is at the edge of the map?  For route planning, it's awkward to have to move the map further than needed, and constantly using the R key seems, well, sort of distracting.

If the blue ball represents some sort of hot spot, could you just increase the size of the hot spot? An adjustable size would really be cool!

There's already an implicit lower limit in the calculation of "moving time", but depending on the activity, this value really needs to be changed.

Krein, perhaps ideally the 'speed sufficient to be considered moving' could be set in two different areas; one for the calculations displayed in the track data, which presumably one would not adjust after a value is chosen, and additionally it could be set differently in the track shading dialog.

Say I wanted to get a feeling for my uphill hiking. I could set the lower limit to say 1 mph, and the upper to 2 mph to get the maximum number of shading colors. However this wouldn't work for downhill. Here maybe I might want to change the limits to maybe 1.5 to a max of 3 mph. A runner or bike rider could use other limits to see minor changes in speed in different areas of ride or run.

But no need to change the overall moving time displayed in the track data.

I'm being as clear as mud again I think!  '<img'>

Hi Krein,

The track shading works on my computer; very nice except that the current lowest speed I can set for the limit seems to be 5 mph. I would not want to throw out any gps points that are between say 3 and 5 mph, but the result is that for hiking the shaded track does not give much useful information.

Having the speed limit go down to say 2 mph would give more options - as long as doing so does not change any track data.

You might also consider a low speed limit, below which one is considered stopped, and color coded with say, black. This way you could accentuate minor changes in speed or pace.

Just a quick note to say that the high res. export feature now works for me in v.2.85. No more hash at least up to the max size I've tried (3000 x 2500).  No other changes here.

Next step maybe: high res. 3D exports. Now that would be cool!

I've just begun to play around with the large exports to see what can be done to tune them up in Photoshop Elements. Perhaps others interested in this could post cookbook settings that work for their use. At this point I'm exporting as a bitmap, using the 'median' noise filter set at 1 or 2, then using Neat Image with various settings. Still experimenting!

The truth is that not many people have requested this, so it's lower on the totem pole than other features.

Krein, this feature would be most useful for me too. Often I just need a quick distance and direction from point A to point B, say for hiking or driving directions. Don't need to save anything, don't want to create waypoint files I will not need, etc.

By the way, it would be handy if one could delete and or rename .gpx files from within TF. (Or can you already?) I'm getting a huge collection of these files some of which were just for planning. Unless I remember what files are safe to dump (unlikely!) I need to have TF open to manage the files. Not needing Windows Explorer would save a step.

Hi Krein
I've been playing a bit with the export feature in v. 2.8. Works *great* for me up to a certain resolution. If I make the width greater than 1600 I get hash as a result, or if I make the height greater than 1600 I start getting a blue strip at the bottom of the saved image. I have a Raedon 9200 SE video card (128 mb). Is this all the card can manage?

In any case, now that you have this feature sort'a under control, what would really be the cat's meow is to extend it to the 3D view. That would be absoutely great for illustrating routes, both in print and even on info boards at trailheads. Can you do it? Is it possible?

Perhaps TF could refer to this .bmp file instead of using it internally. That way users could tweak the individual icons to suit. NGS Topo! has such a .bmp file, and for my use, I much prefer my modified icons over the stock ones.

I'd also like to add my vote to fixing the overlapping camera icons, especially with the html map feature. I often photograph things of interest for the Forest Service, and before I started using the html map I would have to write a note describing where each picture was taken. It was a real pain, especially with lots of photos.

The html map makes things *so* much easier. Plus the map is intuitive to use so I don't have to explain it to the recipients. In addition, they get much more information than before.

So fixing the icon problem would be a big help!
One further suggestion: if I first generate a map that covers all the pics taken [referencing one folder containing all the pertinent pics] and then try to create a map or maps that zoom in to a particular area again saving the index file in the same folder, it appears that the first index file is replaced.

It would be very handy if the code found that an existing index.html file was present it would be preserved and the next one given another name like index2.html. That way it would be easy to generate an overview plus zoomed in maps to show the detail, all in the same folder with all the pics which can then be sent to those interested.

Would that be possible?

Krein, found this on the Google site; based on what I read, I'll bet that Google would not object to your using their maps. I notice that they are reserving the right to add advertizing in the future, so that suggests what their business model will be for the product.

Archived - Feedback and Comments / HTML ImageMap feature

Hi Krein,

I've just discovered how useful the 'Generate HTML ImageMap' function can be.  It's a huge timesaver for site documentation. Just carry the GPS and take pictures.
One minor issue however is that if the pictures are taken in close proximity, unless you zoom way in, the clickable camera icons in the HTML file overlap, sometimes so that some are not accessible.  If one is trying to get an overview of an area, it my not be desirable to zoom in to the point where the icons are not overlapped.

Any quick and dirty solutions?  Perhaps one could edit the icon with an icon editor and make it smaller. Or maybe it would be possible to have the camera icon function as a callout with a line pointing to the exact spot the picture was taken as well as positioning itself so that it does not overlap any other icon. Another solution might be to place the icons in a bitmap file so the user could edit them.

For my part, it would be worth tinkering. For my latest little project, the HTML ImageMap feature generated an intuitive map that I can distribute easily and can be read by anyone with a browser. It explains the situation better than anything I think I could have come up with, and it took only a minute or two. I would have spent perhaps a whole day trying to do it myself.

I think this is a hidden gem!

I've recently had some 'poofing' for no apparent reason - - until I remembered that I had gradually been increasing the cashe settings, and the memory use settings. I set all of these way back and the poofing stopped. Then I started increasing them again without problems until...

I increased my RAM from .75 gb to 1.5 gb. Since TopoFusion uses a percentage of RAM to set the memory use values, these numbers increased a lot. Apparently something (XP SP2 or who knows what) could not use all that dedicated RAM, and I got a poof every time I tried to run TopoFusion. I backed the setttings down, and everything is fine again.

By the way Krein, it would be great to know more about the end effect of these settings For example, for normal use, is there an upper limit beyond which you won't see any difference? Say on the 3D settings. At least that way I could crank up only the settings that really make a difference.

I like the ability to  drag the 3D view with the mouse and am getting more adept with it, but I too think it would be great to also be able to use the keyboard arrows.

I just got the NGS Topo! Streets & 3D Views Expansion Pack, and I'm really enjoying the 3D features which allow you to quite easily 'fly' over the terrain, looking in any direction as you do it.

The controls are as follows:
up arrow; go forward
down arrow; go backwards
left arrow; turn left
right arrow; turn right
Ctrl; pans left (moves the view point perpindicular to the direction viewed)
0 / Ins; pans right
Page Up; look up
Page Down; look down
Home: increase elevation (as measured from the terrain directly below, allowing you to fly maintaining a constant elv. from the ground)
End: decrease elevation
There is a slider bar to contol the speed at which you move.

It's all quite intuitive and I find easy to use with just a bit of practice.

It would be super if TopoFusion could use the same system!
I'm not sure, but I think that this would also let you use a joystick for control.

I thought the example of the differences between 10 meter and 30 meter DEM resolution posted by Kanyon Chris was most interesting. Thanks!

For complex terrain being able to switch to 10 meter data would be quite nice.  '<img'> I think it would be most helpful in deciding whether certain proposed routes are practical, or impractical.

In that TopoFusion currently allows you to specify the location of the folder containing DEM data (under 'options'), would it be possible to add to this dialog so that one could specify separate folders for 10 meter and 30 meter data, and then also have an additional toggle button after the 3D button to select which data set will load?

Archived Support / DEM resolution, v2.5

Thanks Krein,

A 'typo' in my questions:   '<img'>

Replace meters with feet.

I was hoping that I could use 30 foot resolution DEM data on small areas I am interested in, even though that data would overlap my large 90 foot resolution file.

Seems like a lot of work, but maybe I could temporarily rename the 90 foot res DEM file to force the use of the  30 foot res.

Is there an easier way?

I'll bet the answer to this question is somewhere in the documentation, but I'm lazy.  ':p'

I'm guessing that the auto DEM download gets the 100 meter resolution DEMs. My existing DEM files are also 100 meter. Is it possible to use the 30 meter DEMs? Can they co-exist with the 100 meter, say for an area of special interest?

Would it be possible to be able to select 100 meter or 30 meter for the auto download feature?

And if one can use the 30 meter stuff, would it actually help the display on the screen?

In case any others have a similiar experience:

I downloaded the 2.5 upgrade (the zip file) and overwrote the existing files as directed. When I started TopoFusion up, all I saw was a white screen centered on one of my existing .gpx waypoints that I had been using. Of course I thought that I had screwed up once again.  After doublechecking the files, I tried again, and finally noticed that the program was zoomed way out to the land-sat range. All I had to do was zoom in with the mouse wheel. Silly mistake. But that problem solved.

Then I could not get my existing DEM files to load. Must have messed that up somehow I thought. I looked through the various dialog boxes twice, and just didn't see an appropriate setting (in the 3D preferences dialog) till the 3rd time! Oh well. Just me I guess.  '<img'>  Now things are working, and I can explore the new features.

By the way, a brief note about the upgrade procedure for registered users on the download page might be helpful. I forgot just how I did it last time, and started to download the demo version before I remembered.

Archived - Feedback and Comments / Feature request: 'digital fog'
« on: January 28, 2005, 05:52:48 AM »
Yesterday, as I was looking out across rather complex terrain when the valleys were filled with fog, I noticed how easy it was to identify the major features.

To help in getting a broad overview, would it be possible to generate a digital fog effect? Sort'a like an if - then statement. If the DEM value is less than a user set value, then the modified DEM will report the set value, and the color will be white or gray.

OK, so it's a wierd request! :-)

I had this problem, and others of similiar nature until I upgraded my video card. Prior I had frequent freezes which were only partially cured when I reduced the number of tracks that load on startup. At one time I suspected a corrupted ini file, but it turned out that was not the problem, although replacing appeared to work, only because it reset the gpx files it loaded.

Was it worth a new video card, even though the other programs I used worked OK with the old one?

You bet! I think Topofusion is absolutely *amazing* running  with adequate computing horsepower.
