TopoFusion on other OS - Mac / Linux / TopoFusion working on Mac OS X!
« on: October 02, 2007, 11:16:20 PM »
A quick update on TopoFusion under Mac OS X (you can read here for the whole story,  http://www.topofusion.com/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=1986):

The long and short of it is that the latest TF Pro no longer works at all under Parallels, as of this writing.

However, using VMWare Fusion Beta 1.1 and TF Basic it is working 100% from what I can tell.

2D and 3D work great, and my GPS transfer went smooth as silk.

So that is the most workable combination so far, and it seems to be 100% (or close to it).

Good idea, thanks for the suggestion on the Basic version.

I'll give it a try.

Thanks for the reply.

Oh, well, it was a beautiful dream while it lasted.

There are a number of Linux projects to emulate Direct3D (such as http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxglwrap, which maps it to OpenGL and supposedly supports up to DX8), hopefully they'll progress enough to support TF under Linux.

Both Parallels and VMWare Fusion are still under very active development, so I'm confident one of them will figure it out soon.  Fusion just crashes after using TF for a few minutes, though a better video card may help (it says mine is lacking features).

Party on!

Hi,

I'm a long time TopoFusion user that has switched from PC to Mac OS X, and quite like the Mac.  But I miss TF.

I had it working under Parallels, but their latest update made it stop working, now it dies with the error "Fatal Error: Couldn't create memory pool surface".

Of course, this is all due to Parallels' (and VMWare Fusion's) limited and flaky support for Direct3D.

This got me wondering if the 2D aspects of TF wouldn't work just fine if the 3D weren't initialized.

Is it possible to delay the initialization of TF?  Or possibly have a shortcut in the Start Menu that starts TF in "2D Only Mode".

I don't understand the inner workings of TF, of course, but if Direct3D isn't used for anything but the actual 3D functions, adding a $without_3d variable (or whatever) that prevents the initialization of Direct3D and hides the 3D related buttons and file options seems like it would work.

I have seen other people searching the net for the same solution, for TF specifically.  In fact, one had it installed under Linux and it ran, but died at the Direct3D initialization.  I wouldn't be surprised if the 2D things worked quite well under OS X and Linux with the 3D parts disabled.

Thanks,
Metzen

P.S.  If anyone else would find this useful, speak up...   :}

Archived Support / Merging Multiple Tracks
« on: August 08, 2007, 11:11:15 AM »
Thanks, the "reverse last segment" should work fine.

At TF startup it takes 4 seconds to load the 37 MB file, but the performance is pretty good once you're in.

Perhaps the "clear all segments" function should be called when you click off of that segment, or click on a new segment without the Shift key held down.

If I zoom out to encompass the entire file it gets a little choppy, but most of the work is done zoomed in pretty far, and if I'm not working on it that file can be unchecked, which immediately makes the dragging around snappy again.

Still, a 2x improvement is always welcome (as would be auto-detecting and reversing of the last segment, when you have nothing else to do, which may be never).

Thanks for a great product!

« on: August 08, 2007, 10:47:32 AM »
I have a 37 MB .gpx file with a ton of different tracks, all from different days and lots of start and end points.

I see the new Merge Tracks Tool, a very nice addition.  When I turn it on and then click on a multiple tracks while holding Shift, if I click on two adjacent track segments in a particular order it works as expected.  But if I click on the other one first, then the second, a straight line connects the ends.  Is there a way to suppress that connecting line?

Likewise, when using the Merge Tracks Tool is there a way to suppress the profile window?

Also, once you have selected some tracks, it is very difficult to deselect them.

I have a ton of work to do in this .gpx file, and even small improvements in this tool and my understanding of it will save me a lot of time, not to mention being useful to other users.

Thanks!

TopoFusion on other OS - Mac / Linux / TopoFusion working on Mac OS X!
« on: August 08, 2007, 10:26:54 AM »
Just an update to this.  The latest Parallels update now works even smoother with TF.

Make sure to resize the Parallels window to a native resolution (ie. 1280 x 1024, etc, rather than the random sizes it chooses on its own).  If you resize TF the tiles go weird until you restart TF.

The 3D now works surprisingly good!

Great news for use Mac TF users.

Woohoo!

I am a long time user of TopoFusion and love it.  I switched to OS X a few months ago for a myriad of reasons, and the one thing I missed was TopoFusion.

The new version of Parallels Desktop just came out, and supports running DirectX games and applications.

I installed it and for the most part TopoFusion works perfectly.  There were some weird video problems when I would resize the window, but getting the windows size I want, exiting, and then reloading TF fixes the problem.

Just thought any other Mac OS X users might like to know.

Thanks,
Brian

Archived Support / New Google Maps Satellite Data
« on: February 27, 2007, 02:10:24 PM »
Google Maps just rolled out an upgrade, at least for Utah there is now color satellite imagery for the entire state, at all but the highest level of resolution.

I wish they made their data available like TerraServer does.

I know it's out of your control and you can't make the data available in TF, I just wanted to share the good news about the update, and lament about it's irrelevance to TF...

The thought crossed my mind to suck down the tile sets, resize and geo-reference them, and setup my own server to return the tiles (pointing the appropriate Google domains to my machine) and trick TF into importing the new imagery.

But seemed like a lot of work and violates the Google TOS.  It was a good dream...

Archived Support / Downloading Tilesets Stalls and Starts Over
« on: February 26, 2007, 10:44:43 AM »
OK, downloading the tilesets makes more sense now, because it goes skip ahead or go faster for tiles that have already been downloaded.

One problem, one suggestion.

After downloading an area for a given tile set, I go to that area and as I'm looking around in that tile set most of them are there, but I'm coming across swatches of tiles that are missing.  If downloading is enabled they are immediately downloaded.  But since this is a computer for my ATV I won't have internet access, so that isn't an option.

When using the download tool, does it retry images that fail?  Perhaps if a particular tile doesn't download, it can be added to an array and after the download operation is finished, the tiles in that array are tried one last time, or even loop through the array 3 times to be sure.

Which leads to my suggestion.  When downloading a large area and leaving it running overnight, often I'll come back to an alert saying that the internet downloading was disabled because it couldn't communicate with the server.  It would be nice if it retried every 30 minutes (or some user configurable value).

Or have a button that says "Retry", whereas right now your only option is "Cancel".  I've tried re-enabling downloading, but then the current download never resumes.  Then you have to redraw the box and start over.

Thanks again for the great software.  I've always loved TopoFusion since I bought it.  But I never appreciated just how great it is until I bought National Geographic Topo!.  Their maps are great, but their interface is horrible!!!   If they had any brains in their head at all they'd buy you guys up for millions...

I haven't tested the map downloading yet, but oh man, the user maps are MUCH better!

Bless you!  :}

I have 10 user maps totaling 24 MB scattered around Utah, and when I would zoom out before it would really start to stutter and often become unstable.

Now it is completely usable and quite smooth.  Nice!

I have about 10 more to add and was putting it off afraid I would never be able to zoom out again.  Now I'll add them tomorrow without hesitation.

Thanks!

I was drawing a box that included Utah and a small part of Nevada, which I believe are in different zones.

So you can only download from one zone at a time?  Is that determined by where you centered?

It has restarted a couple of times now.  Each time the total is almost exactly the same, but I haven't noticed it going faster than normal or skipping some blocks.

The drawn box is as close to the same size as possible each time (within about 20,000 tiles on a 480,000 tile download).

Unless the tiles are being downloaded in random order, or at least a different order, I was thinking I would see it going faster or jumping ahead, but haven't.

It really does appear the tiles are being downloaded again.

It got to 120,000 the first time, and nearly 250,000 the second time (running all night).

I guess I'll keep watching it and see if I can glean something.  Or stop watching and just remember the old proverb, "A watched download never finishes".

Thanks again.

Using 3.0 I turned off every tileset except for Topo 4 Meter, then selected the entire state of Utah.  0 / 490817.

After a few hours it was 1/4th the way done, but had stalled (hiccup in the internet, disturbance in the force, whatever).

So I hit cancel, drew approximately the same box again, and it started all over again.

I expected that after drawing the box the total would be more like 0 / 380000 or 120000 / 490817.

Were the downloaded tiles just discarded?  Is this the normal behavior?

As a quick follow-up, I'm going to be downloading other surrounding states as well.

If you get to where you have 3 or 4 GB of DEM data, is that going to slow down TF startup and usage?  How and when is that read?

I am downloading DEM data for the entire state of Utah.  It's on the order of 1.2 GB of data.

Is there an optimial file size to break the data into?  You can download it in 250 MB, 100 MB, 75 MB, etc.

Will the 250 MB DEM files slow down the 3D viewing in TF?

Thanks!

Beta Testing / User Maps Storage Idea
« on: February 17, 2007, 10:38:28 PM »
I have an idea for user maps.  I don't know a thing about the inner workings of TopoFusion, but I am a thinker...  So I'll leave it to the developers as to whether the idea has any merit.

After adding a 10 MB JPEG there was a noticeable decrease in performance.  Chopping it into 4 different images and scaling it down to fit within my graphics cards maximum texture size helped, but there still seemed to be a performance hit.

If I use the user maps feature as much as I suspect I will, I anticipate performance problems.

So what if after the user maps were converted to another tile set?  The different tile sets are absolutely huge (covering most of the earth at varying resolutions) and scale very well.  Can the same approach be used for additional maps?

I am absolutely giddy to have found all of the trail maps for the state of Utah in PDF format (http://www.stateparks.utah.gov/ohv/maps.htm).  I plan to import them all as user maps.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyway, just a thought.

Thanks for the great software.

One thing I forgot to mention, I go on a lot of ATV Jamboree's with hundreds of ATV'ers around.

The reason I asked was I just installed National Geographic Topo! for Utah.

Their software sucks rocks compared to TopoFusion, but the map quality (topo only, no ariel) is amazing.

The 3D feature and usability is crap compared to TF, but the 2D shading really does add a lot to the maps.  They stay looking crisp and clean and you can still get a sense of the lay of the land. The arial shadows aren't even close to being a replacement.

I'm building a mapping / data logging computer for my ATV that will have a 15" or so LCD, and having the crisp, clean topo's will make it very usable in 2D mode with live tracking.

I can see that many other things would be much higher on the to-do list, but I agree that 2D shadows shouldn't be dropped from the list.

Thanks.

Beta Testing / User Map Calibration & Image Quality with Beta 3

My last week has been a hectic one, so it could have been before that.

The file time on my topofusion.exe is Feb 3, 1:31 PM, but I wasn't home then, so that may have been the time you built the file.

It's 1,916 KB.

I'll still download and upgrade then try to duplicate the problem.

Beta Testing / User Map Calibration & Image Quality with Beta 3
« on: February 06, 2007, 01:25:16 PM »
I'm pretty sure I found out what was happening.

When I had a problem calibrating the image, I would delete it and start again.  But I ~think~ the program was remembering my previous points and screwing things up.

I would enter points 1 and 2, but when I tried to go further it would screw things up.

The calibration points are associated to the filename, which hadn't changed.

So to try to work around this I loaded the image, immediately hit "reset calibration", which shouldn't do anything, and then proceeded.  Calibration then worked as expected.

You will have a better way than I for confirming whether or not this is happening.  If it is, a simple fix would be to call the "reset calibration" function(s) immediately after adding a new file, before giving back control to the user.

Now the maps look good and I'm able to get them dialed in quite well.  More than 3 points would help, but isn't completely necessary.

Thanks for all the hard work.

Thanks for the quick reply.

You may want to download and try that same map, since it will be a good point of reference if we continue this discussion.  It covers the very southwest corner of Utah, and crosses over into Arizona and Nevada a little.

I'll resize or split the image.

I absolutely love the User Map feature, but I'm struggling to get it to work with the image I have.

Here is the image I'm using:
http://www.atvutah.com/tristat....map.jpg

It's a 10.2 MB JPEG, 8451 X 4821.

If you ATV in southern Utah it's a great map.

Two problems I'm having:

1.  When calibrating, I can get close with 3 points (as discussed elsewhere, more would be great).

After calibrating those 3 points I clicked on Calibrate by Hand, expecting to be able to tweak my 3 points, but instead was given two points in the top left and bottom right corners. It seemed to have discarded my 3 calibrated points.

It would be better if you could nudge the other calibrated points (which I haven't found a way to do yet).  Maybe both could be there, "Calibrate Points" and "Calibrate Corners".  In fact, being able to calibrate by all four corners would make a lot of sense.

Calibrating this image may be complicated by the fact that the image crosses over into another zone.

2.  Once I have it in TopoFusion and calibrated pretty close, the image quality is really fuzzy.

Here you can compare the original and how it displays in TF:
http://www.winchesterhills.com/MailDropOrig.jpg
http://www.winchesterhills.com/MailDropTF.jpg

Is there a way I can resize / resample the original image so that it displays better?  For instance, so many pixels per mile, etc?

Thanks,
Metzen

Can you please expound on this a little bit?

I want to scan in an ATV trail map I have as a big JPEG, calibrate it, then be able to use it in TopoFusion.  I'm registered and using 2.97.

I can't find any way to add the image or calibrate it.

Do I have to somehow add the JPEG and calibrate it outside of TopoFusion using another program?

Can you point me in the right direction?

I agree.  That would also remove any copyright concerns, as the included icons could just be quick and crappy  '<img'>   and then users could collaborate separately to create their own.

That seems like a really clean way of approaching it.

Kuren, thanks for the .gpx file.  Did you do that by hand or with a program?

OK, heres's a .bmp of the waypoint icons, as imported from a GPS V.

I'll let someone at TopoFusion take over from here, since you guys know what format you need, and how closely you want to match these icons to balance usability and legality.

Thanks for a great program.  I look forward to seeing the waypoint icons in action, as I'm sure a lot of other users will too.

The icons of all of the programs I have seen very closely resemble the icons on my GPS V.

If I had to guess I'd say most application authors have pulled the icons off of a GPS unit using a screen capture program, then touched them up or modified them slightly.

While this may not be entirely "IP neutral", I'd say it is "IP benign".

I think it's a good thing that all of the icons are very similar.  It would be very inconvenient and incongruous to go from a program to my GPS and have the icons be completely different.

I posted the other .bmp files simply as an example, and not to be used directly.

Similarly, here is a screen capture from my Garmin GPS V:
http://www.gzmarketing.com/images/gpsv.bmp

Not identical, but similar icons.

I think the best thing to do would be to create one of each waypoint in close proximity, capture them from the GPS, load them into an editor and use them as a reference point for creating new icons.  The new icons would be similar, which is a "Good Thing", but not derivative works.

It could be done in a few hours, I imagine.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi,

I'm requesting icon support for waypoints.

I'm getting into GeoCaching and it's really fun.  There are 800 different caches within 20 miles of my house.

There are different standard icons for waypoints, including GeoCache and GeoCache (found).

On my GPS V I can look and see a treasure chest icon for GeoCache's, and caches I've found the icon is an open treasure chest.

It would be nice if those were supported and recognized in TopoFusion.  On my GPS V I can glance and find a cache I haven't been to, it would be nice to do the same in TopoFusion, since the icon type is stored in the GPX file I'm importing.

Thanks,

Archived Support / Caching of Auto-Downloaded DEM Files
« on: March 14, 2005, 11:26:56 AM »
Hi,

I love the new features and improvements in 2.50, they are great!

Is there a plan to cache the auto-downloaded DEM files?

I use TopoFusion on my laptop out in the mountains, where I don't have an internet connection (someday, perhaps...).

It would be nice to be able to view the area at home and auto-download the DEM's, then have those permanently saved so that when I view the area again in the mountains without an internet connection the 3D data is still there.

Another dream item for the wishlist that has sort of been mentioned elsewhere, would be the ability to download DEM data in advance using a tool similar to the download tool for map data where you draw a box and it downloads tilesets.   The ability to draw a box and download DEM data and select which resolution of data to get would be awesome.

Thanks for the hard work!

I actually just went through the process of trying out a number of different video drivers, trying them each for a while.  If I remember correctly the problem was consistent across the different drivers.

Getting cutting edge drivers for a laptop isn't easy, you either have to wait for the vendor to release them, or get patched drivers that trick the normal ATI drivers into working on your mobility chip.

Getting the drivers to work the way I want them to, with dual monitor and the other stuff I want, isn't easy.  So I'll probably just live with this problem for now.  All it really means is I can't use the normal maximize button, but instead have to drag the window to about full screen.

Thanks,
Brian

Once downloaded, I could use the data just the same, you just didn't see it load in realtime.

TopoFusion rocks!  You guys need an affiliate program so I can get paid for all the people I'm turning on to it...   '<img'>

One problem I've had, under all the versions I've used, I believe, is that when I go to full width on my widescreen LCD (1680 X 1050) on my Dell laptop, the  map image becomes garbled.

It happens whether I maximize or just drag the width to full width.

Here is a screen capture at just under full width:
http://www.gzmarketing.com/just_under_full.jpg

And here is one at full width (garbled):
http://www.gzmarketing.com/full_width.jpg

This only happens at non-native map resolutions.  By that I mean that when you use your wheelmouse to zoom in and you reach say the 64 meter topo, it looks fine even when maximized, but then you zoom in further (still using the 64 meter images, just zoomed in) and then it gets garbled.

The garbling is actually the image getting stretched extremely to the sides, creating banding out of the individual pixels on the map.

When zoomed in further you can see map features, they are just really distorted.

This doesn't happen on my second LCD (dual monitor setup) at 1280 X 1024, only on the widescreen built into the laptop, at 1680 X 1050.

Thanks,
Brian

He he he, I could have sworn I looked *everywhere* for a way to turn those off.  It turns out I looked *almost* everywhre...

Yes, this functionality is fine.  It only takes a second to refresh the image and remove the labels, and that is just dandy.

Now that I understand this a little better, perhaps another suggestion:

Maybe move the 3D button to the right on the toolbar and add buttons to turn on and off tracks and waypoints in 3D mode, and maybe even a small slider or dropdown to adjust the elevation exageration.

The interface is already clean and usable, that would just make it a little more so.

Thanks again for a killer product.  I went up by Strawberry Resevoir in Utah scouting elk over the weekend and carried my GPS with me, and it was so cool to show my Dad and brother in 3D mode right where I'd been, where I saw the elk (I made waypoints for anything of interest).   They were blown away.

When using TopoFusion in 3D mode with DEM data, and selecting "Show 3D Waypoints" under 3D Preferences, it would be helpful if the 2D labels were turned off.

If you have a lot of 2D waypoint labels in 3D mode that are close together, you end up not being able to see any of your map image.  Turning off the background for labels under color preferences helps, but it would be quite helpful to turn them off altogether.

Thanks!
