Hi Scott, I have not pinged you in awhile regarding this but just thought I would let you know I am still interested. Amateur radio operators everywhere would thank you. :) Ride on...

Hi Scott,

Search and Rescue, Amateur Radio Operators, and people everywhere would love an APRS implementation in TopoFusion.

I just saw that USAPhotoMaps released their source code to the public domain. It includes an APRS implementation.

http://jdmcox.com/

Just hoping this might help you decide to move forward with APRS in TopoFusion.

I know this has been mentioned by me in the past but its been awhile and I just thought I would let you know this continues to be something that is of interest to me and other Amateur Radio Operators and Search and Rescue teams. Adding APRS functionality to Topofusion would be incredible for us!

Blender, Thanks for the update. Has the "save tracks" glitch been resolved yet?

And yes I was thinking the same thing that a USB hub would be neccessary, I have about 250 GB of maps so the Surface PRO memory just wont cut it. How is the daylight readability of the Surface PRO?

I do not have a Microsoft Surface. I am hoping that someone who does will post up. I am very interested in buying one but since Topofusion is one of the primary apps I would run I would like to get some feedback before making the plunge. I am particularly interested in how the touch screen interface works with Topofusion. Does an app need to be written specifically to use a touchscreen? Also how does the GPS interface work? I am assuming a USB hub would be needed  because if you have lots of maps they would need to be stored on a USB hard drive (external) and the GPS would need a USB port also. Since the Surface only has one USB port a hub would be required.

Anyway if anyone has a Surface, load Topofusion and let us know what you find!

Is there an update to V4.5  to re-instate the old tilesets for new installs yet? If not what is my best route to get them back? Can I re-install V4.4 without having problems? I am going out this weekend and need maps!

9
Now that the shutdown of MSR maps has happened one of the best APRS software packages, USAPhotomaps, is much less useful. The developer has indicated that he will not be upgrading the software. This would be a great time for Topofusion to start supporting basic APRS functionality.

Please give this some thought. The amateur radio community could really use a great piece of software like Topofusion if it supported APRS.

How do you do a batch download with "US Topo"? I do not see the option in the list.

11
I have a similiar issue when I run a large batch download.
All but about 20 of the tiles will download.
Then CPU cycles hit the roof.
Batch download "cancel" button will not work.
Have to ctrl+alt+delete and force the process to quit

Is there a way to rebuild the mapindex.dat file from the map*.dat files? If there isn't there probably should be.

This is an extremelly painful experience. Having all your data destroyed from a corrupted index file is a disaster.

bodyI rebooted but Topofusion is producing an error message: “Couldn’t open Maps.dat for writing……

Dismissing the error produces another:  “Fatal Error: Couldn’t open Maps.dat for reading.  Check for existence of mapindex.dat and masps0.dat in the maps directory…

I may be mistaken. It is possible I only restarted topofusion. After thinking about it I do not have a specific recollection of rebooting. I will reboot when I get home from work.

As suggested I rebooted my computer.

Some more info. This is the circumstance under which it failed. I was doing a batch download. During the download Topofusion unexpectedly quit. I restarted topofusion. When I did, it just said  "Couldn't open maps.dat for writing..." and then failed.

Topofusion wont start. I get a message that says "Couldn't open maps.dat for writing..." I have 160 GB of map data. This took months to compile. I don't want to delete my maps. What can I do?

Please help!

24
Thanks for the reply. At least I know it is not something on my end. I will try again in a few days.

25
I upgraded to Topofusion V4.22 with the new land ownership server fix. The problem is the server performance has been terrible when attempting to download Land Ownership tiles. If I am lucky I get one or two tiles downloaded in a minute. Using the batch download tool I get a few tiles downloaded then I get the "Error Downloading From Current Server, Retrying in 60 seconds" message.

I am assuming that this is because of poor server performance and not some setting that I could change in Topofusion. Is anyone else having similar performance problems when trying to download Land Ownership tiles?

26
Thanks. I had been having problems downloading.

Feature Requests / Re: Declination Calculator
« on: March 25, 2010, 01:32:34 PM »
Someone else out there must use a compass...

Is this something that would be difficult to implement?

28
It would also be nice if you could enter your magnetic bearing instead of the true north bearing when putting in the info for your waypoint projections. (Another reason to have a built in declination calculator).  : )

Feature Requests / Re: Declination Calculator

Any thoughts on this? I use a compass quite a bit when I am out exploring. Having the declination would be very useful. As is is now I need to remember to get it before I go on a trip. Having it as part of the software would be nice.

I would still love to have this functionality in TF, but have not been able to decipher the basics of the protocol.  It should not be so hard, but it's very complicated.

I will have another look, though.

Scott,

I can not remember if I have done so before but I will try to send you a log file from another piece of APRS software that shows what the data looks like. I think once you see the log file the protocol might make more sense and seem more simple.

Is there a key that can be used to zoom in and out instead of having to use the magnifying glass?  "+" and "-" are for contrast I think. It seems like these keys might be better suited for zoom than contrast.

Feature Requests / Vector and Range Display for use in projecting waypoints
« on: December 04, 2009, 07:03:59 PM »
It would be nice if you could create a vector from your current location on the map. This would make it easier to project a waypoint using triangulation. For example enter a bearing from your current location to a landmark and create the vector. Then move to a new location and repeat the process. The intersection of the two vectors would be a good approximation of the landmarks location. A waypoint could then be created at that location.

An addition to this tool that would be nice is concentric user defined incremental range circles centered on a location. This would also make waypoint projections easier.

Feature Requests / Declination Calculator
« on: December 04, 2009, 06:55:03 PM »
It would be nice if there was a readout of declination based on your current location on the map display. This would make using topofusion with a compass easier.

Bummer, it would be really nice to be able to make an overlay of the ownership layer over a topo map or other map.

I guess I was seeing the shading and thought it was a photo.

When I select land ownership from the pull down list the map always appears overlaid on an aerial photo. Is it possible to change the overlay settings. I would like to see the land ownership overlay on the map type of my choice.

Thanks for the fix. I was wondering why it did not work. The fix worked for me. You might also want to make some changes to the batch download tool. Many of the choices are truncated, for example all of my Land Ownership choices appear as "Land Owner O..."

Most of the SAR teams are using APRS. A full APRS implementation is not neccessary to start. Scott Miller at Argent Data systems might be able to help you get started. He makes APRS hardware.

I am pretty sure I found the problem. I am thinking my preferences were changed (overwritten) when I upgraded to 3.80. Is that possible? When I went to: Options>Preferences>Internet Tab      I changed number of connections from 8 to 25 and checked the "persistant connection" checkbox. Everything seems to be OK again.

TopoFusion Pro / Batch Download - Difficulty contacting server
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:35:35 PM »
I regularly download large areas that I plan on visiting using the batch download tool. This tool has been very reliable for me, until recently. IT would run for hours upon hours wothout issue. My downloads often take hours and sometimes even days. Recently I have been getting a message "Topofusion is having difficulty contacting server..." after a while of downloading. Downloading is then disabled. I assume this is either due to a long server delay or some other network delay. What this means for me is it is very difficult to do a large download when it stops every half hour or so. Anyway I was wondering if it would be possible for Topofusion to try initiating a new connection with the server instead of disconnecting from the server and requiring a manual restart of the download.

BTW- on a related side note, I also use a piece of software called Terrafetcher that downloads map tiles for USAPhotomaps. It has a pretty neat GUI interface for a batch download tool. You might check it out.

Didn't make it until the next release (out soon), but definitely the next one.  Sorry for the delay.

Hi Scott,

Just downloaded V3.8. I took a quick look and saw color aerials were not in the batch download tool. Any word on this?

It would be nice if the DEMs were part of the batch download tool also.

Question: I do very little "panning" to download maps. I always use the "download maps" tool by selecting an area. Is the DEM data collected using this method?

I just went out to the Seamless server and downloaded the DEM files for everywhere I regularly go. Total files were only about 1 GB. It works great. I am really going to enjoy being able to use these offline. Thanks Scott!!!

I will have to read up on that. I have not figured out how to do that, or how I can use it. Sounds cool to have the DEM data offline though.
