TopoFusion Pro / Re: Solved: TF 5.80 - cannot edit gpx files?
« on: October 14, 2024, 03:33:22 PM »
Yes, it's been cruising around for many years now!!  I initially registered in 2007 (sadly, the registration email doesn't say what version it was...),
though I'd been using Basic version for some time before that...

When I came back to TF recently, I was *really* pleased, nae excited, to see that you had managed to incorporate Google Earth maps
into the program!!  That is so cool!!  I still have copies of emails that you and I exchanged,
back in January 2011, that started out with this post from you:

//*********************************************************
This is a friendly chirp from a little bird that if you download the latest TopoFusion beta, from here:
[ deleted ]
There is a hidden feature.  Access it as follows:

Help->About (loads up about screen)
On the keyboard hit Shift-D
A note about "Debug dialog" pops up
Open the Debug Dialog on the main menu
Enable the checkbox at the bottom of the dialog

Keys 7,8,9 now give access to new map types in TF.
//*********************************************************

It *did* work, but was rather touchy - yet I was grateful for it at the time!!
But now, it's just part of the program!!  That is an awesome accomplishment...

Ahhh!!  Thank you!!  It was set to Track Shading was set to Elevation... I changed it back to OFF, and that is fine...

I also needed to move a few of the points around... that took me a bit to figure out, but I got it!!

It's so cool to be back in TF again!!

TopoFusion Pro / Solved: TF 5.80 - cannot edit gpx files?
« on: October 10, 2024, 09:31:39 AM »
I recently wanted to edit a .gpx track file, captured with my Garmin GPS 66sr ...

I load the .gpx into TF, it displays correctly, but I cannot edit the file at all; I cannot even change the track color...
it *shows* the track color changed, in the file list, but it doesn't actually change on the display.
I was initially using V5.78, but upgraded to V5.80, but this issue is not affected.

Is there a fix for this??  I checked the file (which is enclosed with this message), and it is *not* read only...
I've always used TF to correct anomalies in my track files, so I'm surprised to see it not working now!

I am using Windows 10 Pro

TopoFusion Pro / Weird 'topic reply' messages...
« on: October 14, 2023, 05:47:35 PM »
I've been getting some strange messages from TopoFusion support forums...
It started a week or two back, I got 2 (I think) messages, they both had subject lines of:
Topic reply: <some subject line>

and body starts with:
Code: [Select]
A reply has been posted to a topic you are watching by wystra2.

Since then, I've gotten about half-dozen or so more of these messages...
*all* have been referring to valid threads that I *did* post...
Also, most if not all of them have been dated 08/30/23

However, when I go to look at those thread replies, there are *not* replies from that date!!
Furthermore, I cannot find an existing user named 'wystra2' ...

Does our software master, or anyone else, have any idea what is going on??
I just got two more of them today... I'll include an image of the screen for context...

Well, I upgraded to TFP V4.65, and this issue is no longer present; myTopo works just fine in all locations.

Wow!!  This is Amazing... I was having these problems for *years* with MyTopo, I'd discussed it with you repeatedly, but we could never figure out what was wrong; I had just stopped using MyTopo...

So, I just drop in for the first time in a year or so, and this problem is solved by an upgrade!  (I was using V4.2)  MyTopo works *beautifully* now!!  Thank You Thank You Thank You  !!!!!!!

I also use the Vista HCx, and it worked out of the box with TF, on Windows 7 32-bit.  I didn't need the Garmin driver or anything.

TopoFusion Pro / Tf4 - Waypoint list sort-by-date anomaly
« on: February 11, 2011, 06:49:17 PM »
when I sort the waypoint list by date, it ignores the year, sorting by dd,mm,yy... this is sort of worthless, especially when the waypoint list gets longer than a couple of screens.  Yes, that *is* how I have the short-form date set in Win7 (actually, no it's not, I have Win7 set to mm/dd/yy), but it makes no sense to actually sort in that order.  No other Windows program that I use makes this mistake - sort-by-date makes year the first priority, regardless of display order, in Explorer and everywhere else.

Is there any chance of getting this sort routine re-written so it works more usefully?

TopoFusion Pro / A question of maps
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:51:08 AM »
I needed to edit a track list yesterday, but I have a problem with it.  The track was mapped at Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, CA.  The problem that I have is that none of the maps available in TF (4.05) are high-enough resolution that I can clearly see the path that I need to move the points into.

The best that I could find is Color Aerial, but as you can see in the attached map, that leaves alot to be desired.  Urban Aerial cannot map this area, it says "Unable to display map for this location and tileset".  B/W Aerial would be sufficient resolution, but the B/W map is so old that it still shows the woodland that used to exist there, before the lower campus was developed - I cannot even guess how old that must be, that development has been there for at least a decade!  And of course, no other maps actually show the campus details that I'd need for this purpose.

Google Maps/Google Earth show excellent images for this area, so what I did for now was an iterative process; move some points in TF, save as kml, load into Google Earth and view, rinse and repeat.  That has proven sufficient for my current needs... but it would be better if there was a better map in TF.

Geeez, I'm such a dolt...  ???
Actually, your "Select Point" option is exactly what I want in this case.
I rejected "Select Box" initially in this case, because I couldn't put a box around the points I WANT to move without also selecting points I didn't want to move.  However, what I *really* wanted to do is just move each point into the middle of the path that I know I was walking on... which is exactly what "Select Point" does.

I don't know *why* I am so easily confused these days.

Anyway, once again TopoFusion proves itself to be not only an ideal tool, but the only easy-to-use tool for the job... Thank you for your help.

There *is* another issue that I have with TF, relevant to my current requirement, but it's a different topic, so I'll post it separately.

TopoFusion Pro / revisiting track adjustment
« on: December 01, 2010, 08:17:22 AM »
I recorded a track out at Foothill College yesterday, for a class assignment.  For anyone's reference, I'm including the gpx file here (it's only 8KB).  Part of the track is fine, but about half of it, the latter half, is *way* off, showing me wandering blithely through the middle of a building.  I need to be able adjust a group of points (but *not* all of them), and move them to more-reasonable locations.  I'd obviously prefer to do that graphically with drag-and-drop, rather than manually updating coordinates.  Is there *any* way I can manage that in TF ??  If not, can anyone recommend a (preferably free) program that handles this task?

Later note: I could not upload the file to here, because the upload folder is apparently full.  Instead, I've placed it on my website:
http://home.comcast.net/~derelict/files/lcc.transits.gpx

13
Wow, that's pretty cool!!!  Worked perfectly, thanks!!

14
I have often noticed that a track that I record has a constant error across all points in the track.  For example, I might hike along a trail, and when I download my track to Topofusion later, I can see the actual trail on the map, and my track is offset by a few feet.  It would be interesting to be able to apply a correction to all the points in the track, to manually correct for the visible error; maybe something like "move all points 7 feet on bearing 71 degrees" or some such.

Is there any way to try this in TF?  If not, is there any other (preferably free) software that can apply such a correction?

BTW, as a follow-up to this, I recently updated my drivers to current (NVidia 258.96), in order to play Fallout 3 again, and this problem is still present, to the same degree as previously.  So, as we suspected, it is not a driver issue.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: TF4: MyTopo tiles corrupted on download
« on: August 12, 2010, 09:51:48 AM »
Okay, I changed internet connections to 1 and turned off persistent connections, then restarted the program.  I'm still getting corruption, but it's different now... I've uploaded a screen dump of part of the screen - notice that only the bottom of each tile is corrupt; I don't think that was true previously, though I'm not entirely sure...

My only reservation about the "incomplete downloads" theory is that all the other map types work fine, only MyTopo has an issue.  I suppose, though, that it *could* be an issue between me and that one site.  I don't have any other download accelerators or anything running, that could interfere with TF...

Dang, turning off texture compression did not work... after restarting TF, I went to a new area and downloaded MyTopo tiles, and they are still coming in corrupted.

Oh... ummmm... I'm not sure *what* I was looking at when I captured this !?!?
Should I do this over again?

However, it almost certainly was either Sunol Regional Wilderness (37.54N 121.855W) or downtown Fremont, CA

I agree, *very* hard to see how it could be a video card issue, far more likely to be a TF4 issue.  Either way, I guess I'll be living without MyTopo.

Ummm... actually, I'm playing a game now that requires the older drivers, so I think I'll just do without MyTopo for now.  The older topo maps will suffice for my purposes.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: TF4: MyTopo tiles corrupted on download

Just as clarification, however, this is not the same issue that I'm having... I was getting all tiles downloaded, but they were displayed incorrectly - wrong color or scale.

I have also seen this issue of certain tiles displaying "cannot download" when the rest were fine, and I've seen it on different map types, but that is unrelated to my "corrupted tiles" issue, which is only on MyTopo maps.

No, Open Street Map works fine, both in town and in the hills.  I tested multiple zoom levels, from 6-mile scale down to 1300ft scale, both in town and in the park.  No tiles are corrupted at any zoom level on OSM.  Only MyTopo is corrupted.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: TF4: MyTopo tiles corrupted on download

Well, I *am* using a down-rev driver for my Nvidia card, version 178.24, because a number of early DirectX games don't work properly on Windows 7 with current drivers (believe it or not!!).

So why would the MyTopo tiles have a problem when none of the others do??  Are you using a completely different graphics library to render them??  If you use DirectX or OpenGL, nobody (including myself) will have any problems.

Besides, some of the problems that I have don't seem like they'd be graphics-driver related; for example, the fact that the wrong tiles seem to be selected, so that they don't line up with each other... I suspect that drivers are not the issue here.

Just as another experiment, I just went to www.mytopo.com and zoomed down to this same park, and everything displays fine; I'm uploading a screen capture of the image.  I think this points to a problem in TF??

TopoFusion Pro / TF4: MyTopo tiles corrupted on download

I am getting corrupted tiles on MyTopo display.  The tiles are different colors, and don't line up with each other.  I note that each tile *does* look like a valid tile (except for the odd background colors), they just don't match up with each other.

BTW, the regular topo map displays fine, as do all the other maps (once downloads are working!).  Only MyTopo is corrupted.

TopoFusion Pro / Re: TF 4 stopped downloading tiles

TopoFusion Pro / Re: TF 4 stopped downloading tiles

Actually, myTopo is giving bizarre, inconsistent data at my location (37.52067N, 121.84286W).  Multi-colored tiles that don't match up with each other.  Not useful...

29
Topo maps fail (fake firewall error (I'm not running a firewall, besides which, this worked in the past)
Color Aerial sort-of works, except there are missing tiles where previously they were present
(I'm looking at Sunol Regional Wilderness in California)
MyTopo pretends to work, but in fact it's a mish-mash collection of unrelated tiles, in different colors,
that don't align with each other.  I consider that "doesn't work"
B/W Aerial fail (fake firewall error)
Urban Aerial fail (fake firewall error)

What is going on??  Can I revert to an older version of TF and get the old functionality back???

Archived Support / TFP => gpx => GE: no tracks??
« on: August 02, 2007, 07:50:00 PM »
Hiya!!
Yeah, I noticed that saving to kml worked, also, after I'd already sent my previous message off and couldn't modify it!!  So that solution will work fine for me, until you can get around to eventually putting general elevation data into TFP!!  (ducking quickly under the table to avoid a THWACK!!)   ':p'

However, if there's a newer version of GE out, I might as well try it as well....

Archived Support / TFP => gpx => GE: no tracks??
« on: August 02, 2007, 08:03:08 AM »
I'm using TFP to download waypoints/tracks from my GPS60, then I save them as GPX and import into GoogleEarth (to get terrain elevation data).  However, when I open the GPX in GE, all it shows is the waypoints, not the tracks!!!  The data list on the left shows waypoints and tracks both checked, but no tracks are displayed.  Am I doing something wrong??

« on: August 01, 2007, 08:41:29 PM »
Well, if it's okay (since I'm a paying user), I'd like to take the moment to encourage you to put the caching on your todo list!!  Without it, TPF alone doesn't work for me, I'm having to swap back and forth between TFP and GE to get all the information that I need (and I'm having problems as well, importing data from TFP to GE, which is a separate topic for later!!)

I use that capability to plan routes where I'm going to hike, by scanning which routes are steeper or shallower paths.  It also helps me just visualize the terrain that I was travelling through!!

It seems to me that you *must* already have the elevation data available, in order to display the 3D view!!  It's clearly an accurate 3D representation of the scene (VERY accurate, judging from the various tests I've already given it!!)... so it should be available for displaying as well??

(begbegbegbegbegbeg!!!)

Archived Support / TF Pro 3.12 - How do I get elevations to show??
« on: August 01, 2007, 07:25:33 AM »
The elevation shading there, and profile works fine.  The problem with shading is that it doesn't actually show tell me what the elevation is at any given point.

What I actually want is for the window to show the current elevation wherever I point, like GoogleEarth does.  You already show latitude and longitude in real-time, as I move the cursor.  I think the ground elevation should show as well, then I'd get complete information on the location that I was pointing at.

As I'm typing this, I now realize that this has *nothing* to do with my track data, this is general map information.  I wonder where elevation information on the terrain comes from??

I've registered TF Pro, and am using V3.12.  I've imported tracks and waypoints (from my Garmin GPS60) for a recent trip, and it is displaying properly in the program.  However, there isn't any display of elevations anywhere, is this correct??  The track list shows elevation for each of the tracks, but I don't see how to display this data on the main screen.  Could someone advise me on this??
