Maps for GPS units

GPS maps seem very limited even if you pay money for the ones available for garmin units.

It would be nice to get the tiles from terraserver onto the gps

Since I use tf in conjunction with my gps this would be a great feature

It would be nice to get Terraserver tiles onto your Garmin, but unfortunately it's not possible.

The Garmin units can only display vector maps, while terraserver maps are raster (i.e. images).

So unfortunately this is one feature request we cannot fulfill!  Sorry!

There is a new unit out by Delorme that can display raster maps (albeit slowly).  I think the unit is getting somewhat mixed reviews, but it's a step in the right direction.  In a few more years we'll be able to look at TF style maps on a handheld GPS.  Hopefully.

I was just going through past posts and thought I would update this thread with some information.

There is a program that will add pseudo raster maps to some Garmin units. It is still in its infancy, but looks pretty neat. Have a look at Moagu.

A short review of the program:

Thanks for the link.  I'm going to move this to the GPS talk forum since it's of general interest.

I'm going to look at doing this from inside TF.  I sent a few maps to my GPS today, but the process was quite involved.  It'd be pretty snazzy to grab an area in TF and have it create (and/or upload) img files from there.
