GPS Suggestions?

Any thoughts on replacing a Garmin Vista HCx?

Perfectly satisfied w/ the Vista, but pulled a stupid move... placed it on the bumper of my truck as I was loading the bike and... you know the story.

Using it for mtn biking, trail running, and trail layout & design.  Like the Vista form factor, so looking at the Dakota 20 (+ANT, size, larger screen & higher rez are nice features), Oregon 450 might be a bit to large for the biking/running) or the eTrex 30 (when its released).  Maybe the Montana if it was just the trail layout & design

I like my Dakota 20, except for the touch screen.  I'm hoping the new line of eTrex will be the go-to GPS for MTB and general use, but I haven't seen one yet.  The Montana is gigantic -- too big for handlebars is what I have heard.

I'd wait a bit for more reports/testing on the new eTrex.

Thanks for the reply.  Why don't you like the Dakota's touchscreen?  Are you using it w/ a screen protector? 

Did you look at the Oregon?  Bigger screen and only weighs 1oz more.

The new eTrex line doesn't seem to be available yet and I have some projects coming up.

The touchscreen is just a little awkward to use while on the handlebars and riding.  Oregon is a little better but the combo of the touchscreen and sub-par visibility is a little annoying even there.

In the hand both units are great.  I don't have a screen protector on but have found polarized lenses to be helpful.

I though the new eTrex had a street date of right around now, but I know they often get pushed back too...

It would be nice to get Terraserver tiles onto your Garmin, but unfortunately it's not possible.

The Garmin units can only display vector maps, while terraserver maps are raster (i.e. images).

So unfortunately this is one feature request we cannot fulfill!  Sorry!

There is a new unit out by Delorme that can display raster maps (albeit slowly).  I think the unit is getting somewhat mixed reviews, but it's a step in the right direction.  In a few more years we'll be able to look at TF style maps on a handheld GPS.  Hopefully.
