Zoom recenters on mouse cursor
« on: December 13, 2009, 12:03:04 PM »
Currently, the mouse scroll-wheel zoom stays centered on the map screen center in many of the tool modes.  I wonder if it would be possible to enable an option to select a change of this default behavior so that zooming in and out could simply recenter the screen based on the position of the mouse cursor instead?

For example, when using the Zoom Box tool, and clicking once on the map, it behaves the way I would like to see for the scroll wheel.  The map zooms in a level and at the same time it re-centers the map right on the place that is where the mouse was clicked on.

When another tool-tip is selected (not in the zoom tool mode), the behavior changes and it zooms in and out with a lock on the screen center.  This interface switch keeps confusing me, and I find it clumsy to have to scroll and arrow key just to follow details around in the view.

This really gets clumsy when tracing a map, messing around with the scale of a custom user map, long tracks...etc.

I think I would like this too. Similarly, some time ago I suggested having the zoom OUT function (right click with the zoom tool) re-center the screen on the point that was clicked.  I would still like to see that too.

Is there a key that can be used to zoom in and out instead of having to use the magnifying glass?  "+" and "-" are for contrast I think. It seems like these keys might be better suited for zoom than contrast.

+ and - are zoom in/out, but only if you have a num pad.  On laptops I recommend using pgup / pgdown.  I think you are right that the - and = could be zoom in/out, rather than brightness.

A mode for re-centering zoom seems like a reasonable idea.  I'll put it on the list.
