Google Maps: Terrain
« on: April 06, 2009, 08:02:22 PM »
Any way to integrate a new map, similar (or using the actual one) to Google Maps Terrain view?

I also noticed that the search "Choose a board to search in, or search all" area appears behind the submit button in Firefox 3.  More of a website feature request, but hey...

We've been looking at adding a google maps (or earth) mode, but we're still not sure of the legality of it.  Other software does it to some extent, but that doesn't mean it's legal.

We'll see.  Definitely a possible future addition.

I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do, but you can achieve a "terrain view" in Google maps if you have a spot where you can upload a .kml file created in TopoFusion.

Assuming the full link to your file is: http://...MyMapLink.kml

Then your map can be displayed using the link:
http://maps.google.com/?q=http://...MyMaplink.kml

"Terrain view" can be forced by adding &t=p  at the end of the link
http://maps.google.com/?q=http://...MyMapLink.kml&t=p

More details here:

Ken

Thanks for the input.  I did end up figuring out how to save as a kml and then posting on Google Maps.  I guess what I was looking for is a shaded relief topo (preferably integrated into Topofusion, to save on the export/import work).  Although this can be accomplished somewhat using the combo mode, I still find it inferior to say National G's shaded relief and thought that a Google Map integration might be a way to go.  Not trying to slam topofusion--I love it and am happier to support Scott than some giant company--but the shaded relief is the one shortcoming I hope gets updated.

Shaded relief may not be too far off now that TopoFusion has auto-downloaded and fast DEM data at its disposal...

Just a quick note, version 3.90 of TF Pro has been released, featuring shaded relief for all map types.
