Results with Vista on new build

Have not been able to test the new features till now, I think because although I was running DX 9 my old vid card would only support DX 8.  So I just put it off.

I just finished my new build (Intel E6600, Raedon 1650 pro, Asus P5B E using AHCI mode with Seagate NCQ enabled drives) and have Vista installed. New, but mid level stuff. This just so I could really enjoy TF. '>

I was expecting a significant improvement in the performance of TF, but all I can say on first look is that the results are *stunning*. You sort'a have to see it to appreciate it.

Haven't tried to break anything yet, but I have noticed that that in the files display at the bottom of the window, the color for the track is a series of small 'L's.

I'll test more when I get the computer setup finalized

Gack! Who would want to use MS' new OS, It seems each time they release a new version they keep adding more Secret JUNK and hoops to jump through, I WOULDnt be surprised if they can hack into your system and track everything you do. MS is not a trust worthy company and BILL is power hungry.

then you might as well get some implants next. lol Bill already mentioned about new hardware being tied in with Implant RFIDs. No thank you, I dont mind good software but not every aspect of my life to be controlled.

I hear Vistas runs good, any feedback on that OS and what you think so far?

A further report now that I've had a chance to play with the 3.0 release version. So far, everything I've tested works. The user maps plus the usual features I use. Just one little issue that I previously mentioned; the color swatch for each loaded track file is a series of upside down 'L's.

I've got the zooming smoothness cranked up to 10 (the max) and the tile set preference set say 80% to the left and not even a hint of slowdown. Wow! You are gonna have to think about extending the range on the zooming smoothness.  '>

I think TF has just been waiting for better hardware. Now it's here. It's soooooo nice.  

One thought; would it be possible to click a button, or perhaps allow the option of loading the DEM tracks for the area you are viewing in the background? This to allow you to keep working, and maybe preload the DEM data without having the screen freeze while the stuff loads. Maybe even an option to load X, Y and Z dem files in the background after startup. The current behavior keeps me from using the 3D until I really want it because my DEM stash is quite large.

Thanks again for the positive feedback.

Can you post a screen grab of the "L's".  Must be a vista specific thing, because that part of the interface/code hasn't changed since version 1.5 or so.

I also have a large stash of DEMs and I actually don't use them anymore due to speed reasons.  I've found downloading is often faster.

Not sure if we will get around to any DEM speed ups soon.  A higher priority item is going to be caching of downloaded 3D data since more users will get a benefit from it.  But I'll keep the DEM stuff in mind.  Might not be too hard to force some DEMs to load automatically.
