Beta 3.975 obersvations and comments
« on: June 08, 2010, 08:28:18 AM »
Well, I've been using v3.975 for a couple of days now, here's what I've seen.

**  I first tried it on an Aspire One 150 netbook (2gb ram. 500gb HD).
MyTopo & OpenStreet are nice, OpenCycle is really nice!! But, after about 5 minutes in OpenCycle TF would freeze up (task manager says "not responding"). OpenStreet would last a little longer (maybe 10 to 15 minutes) before freezing-up. Color, landsat, B/W, Topo, Canadian, Land Ownership, TopoWMS map worked fine as in previous versions. I have not had any problems with this netbook & TF it had worked GREAT; I use it with a Garmin Vista out in the desert.

**  I thought it must be a problem with the netbook,so I tried it on the desktop (Dell 9100). Still freezes up in OpenStreet & OpenCycle (did I say that OpenCycle is really nice??), sometime it takes a little longer, but it will freeze up TopoFusion. As in the netbook, if I don't use the new maps TF works fine (as before).

**  OpenStreet & OpenCycle bring in alot of wrong tiles. The Map Tool does not work with these maps, so I can't reload those wrong tiles.

BTW, did I say that OpenCycle is really nice??

PS     I don't know if it's v3.975 related or a map server problem, but Mexico BW maps aren't downloading...

Thanks for the feedback.  The locking up on those tilesets is going to be tricky to diagnose.

What do you mean by wrong tiles?  Can you post or send a screen shot?  Do you mean they look like valid map tiles, but they are in the wrong place?  If you close and reopen TF do they stay the same wrong tiles?

Right, the reload map tool does not work for the new tilesets.  It will in the next version.

Open Cycle is a nice service, but I have noticed it sometimes gives white "no map available" tiles, though I am not sure why.  Is that what you mean by wrong tiles?

Yes, tiles are downloaded but they're in the wrong place. Haven't tried closing and reopening TF, thats when I use the reload map tool... I'll try it later.

Me too!  Well actually gray...

A screen shot of the wrong tiles would definitely help.  Thanks.

I love the new MyTopo view.  It is much more readable than the USGS topo maps.

I am having one problem.  When I switch to MyTopo all of the tiles stretch about 25% wider than they should be.  The same is true for Open Cycle Map or Open Street Map.  If I go back to the old views then it all works as it should.

Right, all of the new tilesets are in a different projection than any other maps in TF.  What the current version does is reprojects them, which in most cases mean they stretch wider.  The effect is more noticeable at more 'extreme' latitudes.

I hope to, in a future version, display the maps in the native projection, but do not plan on doing that for this release.

By the way, we should have a fix for the OP's original problem, out soon.
