Images garbled on wide screen LCD
« on: October 04, 2004, 06:36:33 PM »
TopoFusion rocks!  You guys need an affiliate program so I can get paid for all the people I'm turning on to it...   '<img'>

One problem I've had, under all the versions I've used, I believe, is that when I go to full width on my widescreen LCD (1680 X 1050) on my Dell laptop, the  map image becomes garbled.

It happens whether I maximize or just drag the width to full width.

Here is a screen capture at just under full width:

And here is one at full width (garbled):

This only happens at non-native map resolutions.  By that I mean that when you use your wheelmouse to zoom in and you reach say the 64 meter topo, it looks fine even when maximized, but then you zoom in further (still using the 64 meter images, just zoomed in) and then it gets garbled.

The garbling is actually the image getting stretched extremely to the sides, creating banding out of the individual pixels on the map.

When zoomed in further you can see map features, they are just really distorted.

This doesn't happen on my second LCD (dual monitor setup) at 1280 X 1024, only on the widescreen built into the laptop, at 1680 X 1050.

Thanks,
Brian

OK--this is definitely a bug (others have reported it, but we have yet to see a screen shot of what "garbled" means).

Thanks for reporting it!

Hi,

We aren't able to reproduce this bug, so the first thing to try is to make sure your video drivers are the most up-to-date.  It could very well be a video card driver issue.

Let us know if this doesn't solve it, then we will look further into it.

Thanks.

I actually just went through the process of trying out a number of different video drivers, trying them each for a while.  If I remember correctly the problem was consistent across the different drivers.

Getting cutting edge drivers for a laptop isn't easy, you either have to wait for the vendor to release them, or get patched drivers that trick the normal ATI drivers into working on your mobility chip.

Getting the drivers to work the way I want them to, with dual monitor and the other stuff I want, isn't easy.  So I'll probably just live with this problem for now.  All it really means is I can't use the normal maximize button, but instead have to drag the window to about full screen.

Thanks,
Brian

I am having this exact problem on my Dell Inspiron 8500.  I am running the latest display driver available.  The distortion makes the entire map display appear as horizontal lines.  The lines are different colors based on the color of the map display that has been distorted.  This is only when I zoom to non-native levels as the other user also described.  My display is set to 1680x1050 which is the native resolution for my screen.  A fix for this would be helpful since I tend to take the laptop with the GPS on trips.

Thanks,
Tom

I'm having the same problem with my Inspiron 6000.  Any solutions yet?

I am using the newest code for Topofusion and for my Dell Inspirion 6000 with a 1920x1200 screen. I get exactly the same problem. It makes zooming in and out almost useless.

Best guess on this is bad video drivers.  The TF rescaling code has worked on so many video driver and monitor combinations it's kind of hard to believe there would be a bug.  Several users and one of the developers have reported 100% image quality with widescreen monitors too.

Check for newer drivers and report if it makes any difference.

Otherwise I will try to think about how to go about debugging this.  It may be that changing the directX routine we use is the only way.  It just so happens that we're contemplating a switch to new directx (direct3d) at the moment.  So it may solve itself soon enough.

Thanks,.
