Direction lag
« on: March 31, 2004, 08:50:12 AM »
I did a quick circuit which included stopping off to buy a newspaper.

The track implies I went past the shop and then came back then carried on.

Also when I turned a corner a similar thing the track shows I overshot crossed the road then retraced my steps and carried on on the correct route.

Is this "the continue in a straight line unless it I know otherwise" Garmin firmware trying to fill in where satellite lock has been lost?

Any thoughts.

If this is the case is the Garmin measurement going to be based on the distance it thinks it has gone?

Garmin's algorithms are proprietary, so it's hard to say.  The distance traveled on the unit itself may differ from the tracklog distance because the unit doesn't save every point it sees.  But yeah, if you get wrong or bad points, they will enter into the distance.
