Freeze up problem and solution

Thanks so much for a *fantastic* product. I am only beginning to explore what can be done with it beyond the obvious.

Although the program worked well when I first downloaded it, after a while I began having complete freeze ups at odd times, for example when using the scroll wheel to zoom, or perhaps changing the manification, or loading a new file. I reinstalled the program, which solved the problem until I started loading the gpx files I had generated. I deleted the ini file and reinstalled again when it dawned on me that this may be a memory issue.

I have an Abit MB with onboard video and 512 MB ram. Playing with the amount of ram shared with the video via the BIOS didn't help. (Processor is a Intel 2.4 )

The potential of the program made it well worth me trying a 128 MB AGP video card. Problem solved! Everything works as it should.

If I may, a  suggestion or two: it would be nice to be able to adjust the line size of GPS tracks and routes. Likewise it would be nice to be able to change the size of waypoint icons.

Thanks for the positive comments and the feedback.

It's possible that it was just a video card driver issue with your onboard video card.  I'm not sure.  Some users have had success with onboard video cards.  We also periodically run TF on an old Pentium 100 with a 2mb (I think) video card.  It does work--so TF can run in low memory situations.  Not well, but it does run.

I'm sure it rips with the 128mb now though--esp. 3D.

We have been planning on adding line width for some time.  I actually added some of the code, but it got stalled for some reason.  It is definitely a needed feature.

For waypoint Icon--you just mean the little box that is drawn, right?  Of course what we really need are the real graphic icons....

Hi Krein,

I think you are right about the Abit onboard video driver. Changing to the AGP card solved another problem too. With the onboard driver I could not use the S3 suspend state (STR). If I did, the computer would slow way down and then crash after resuming from suspend. (I am becoming less than impressed by Abit's software support.)


Yes, that's the waypoint icon I was referring to.

By the way, I just discovered something really cool. I have been using printed pictures of 3D views as route finding aids to some peaks in the Cascades. I have been able to make them incredibly realistic by opening the exported image in Photoshop Elements, replacing the black background with a gradient fill sky, and then using the 'magic wand' to replace various shades of gray with an appropriate color. It doesn't take long once I got the hang of it.

Here is a 3D view I processed to show part of the route from Peggys Pond to Dip Top Peak, skirting Mt. Daniel. I'm still learning how to do this! This is a combo view so you can judge elevation gain and loss along the route. I was on Daniel last week; the linked image is remarkably realistic. Amazing in fact. Now if I could cover the same area but using 1 meter res. tiles instead of 4 meters, think of the result!
