CVPR

Our CVPR paper, “finding trails” (in Terraserver imagery) is done and submitted, at last. Now onto new things.

Two rides out on Suburban Assault. On the first I realized the first Dick McGee switchback was ridable (I’ve never even attempted it before). A new possibility opened: riding the whole thing.

On the second ride I did it. From the AP news wire:

11/20/03
Catalina Foothills, AZ

In an incredible tour de force, Johnny Krein, last years ‘best left braker’
and winner of 2002’s coveted LIR (Least Improved Rider) award, shocked the cycling and hiking community by riding the switchbacks at the Richard “Dick” McGee Finger Rock trailhead.

Witnesses were reportedly stunned, “Can you ride bikes on this trail?”
“Dood, have you ever been to Moab?”

The Forest Service District Ranger received dozens of calls from
competitors (many suspect one S. Ahlgren to have initiated most of the calls) trying to have Krein arrested for violation of the 1964
Wilderness Act. The Wilderness boundary is clearly yards from the
switchbacks, so Krein, after a lengthy trial proceeding, was absolved of
all guilt.

We have a new face in the race for the big belt: Best Downhiller.

It was mighty toasty out there. I snapped a couple of pictures of some tourists in exchange for two refreshing orange slices. They hit the spot.

Now I’m cleaning up all my files and getting ready for a CDR backup. Then, regearing my mind to start thinking about recreation modeling issues once again. It should be fun.
