It’s heating up in Tucson, which is generally bad. But new opportunities are also becoming available: early morning riding. Nothing really compares to quiet desert mornings.
I pedaled the standard ‘suburban assault’ road+trail ride this morning. The elder residents of the foothills were out enjoying the morning. I love surprising them with a greeting. I guess cyclists wearing T.E.A.M. spandex just generally aren’t friendly, so it catches them off guard.
I love how backwards the standard formula of life is. What I mean is the idea of working while you’re young and saving your free time for when you’re old and less capable of enjoying it. These retired folks were the ones out enjoying life while the younger ones were driving to work.
But I realize that people are different and for some the default formula works. It just doesn’t work for me. And that is all I can say with certainty.
Of course, a balance of work and play is difficult or impossible to achieve. But simply because an aim is not attainable does not mean it isn’t worth trying.
Meanwhile, my thoughts turn northeast to the nearby Sky Islands. If my knee continues to hold, I’ll probably be paying them a visit soon. I’m leading a ride up there on June 8th, but I don’t think I’ll be able to wait that long.
