After exiting the river path, riding back home, I was reminded of another reason last night’s “Tuesday Community Ride” was so cool — being SEEN, as a cyclist, in the dark. Hard to miss 100+ cyclists riding together. Not having to worry about being seen was a unique experience.
But tonight, despite the full moon, despite the light on my bars, despite all the reflective stuff I have on my helmet/bike, despite the 1 watt Luxeon LED on my helmet pointed directly at the drivers face . . . I’m invisible.
People only look for other cars, it would seem. Because no one could possibly be walking or riding on a neighborhood street!
I had two cars pull out in front of me when I had the right of way. Had I not seen them and assumed (correctly) that they didn’t see me (despite all the despites in the above paragraph) it would have been close.
Be careful out there and always ride with some kind of head lamp (much more important than a rear blinky IMO).
I’ve taken to always riding with the full-on night riding LED on my helmet. They notice THAT in their face!
