After the CDT trip I spent a few days in SLC, visiting the family and getting out for a few rides.
That’s my dad, arcing a turn on the shoreline trail. In the background is “Hero hill”, one of my all time favorite climbs. We challenged it that day, but both my brother and I dabbed very early on due to: MUD!
My dad rode right by us, showing us both up. I hopped back on from there, mentally discounted the dab as condition dependent and rode the rest of the climb out clean. Sad will be the year I visit SLC and fail to clean hero hill due to aerobic constraints. I hope that year is a long time off.
We also rode the “Deppe Dog” loop. Basically a Millcreek -> Desolation / Dog Lake loop. A classic, made interesting by fresh snow in some places!
My niece and nephew (twins) are quite the pair. I had a blast playing with them. Here they are playing with my helmet’s headlamp:
I showed them how it works and explained that it lets me ride my bike in the dark.
Owen’s response was, “I want to ride my bike in the dark!”
I’ve grown accustomed to describing the riding of bikes, and being outside in amazing places. But I simply don’t have the words to describe these kiddos, and how amazing they are.
