What’s wrong with this picture?

I got a new fork for the Behemoth. 120mm TA Manitou fork:

But wait, something is seriously wrong here… (what is it?)

So instead I rode the Lev.

Whatchu lookin’ at, human??

He should have been in this shot, but by the time I moved my clumsy self over …. [Continue reading]

Visiting Tucson

My parents were in town last week, so I had the pleasure of showing them a few Tucson trails.

My dad at Starr Pass. I forgot to bring him a helmet, so he rode without.

Later, we hiked Sentinel Ridge and Rock Wren.

After sitting in …. [Continue reading]

Lemmon

This is the ride I’ve been searching for on Mt. Lemmon for years. Don’t get me wrong, Lemmon is full of mountain bike goodness, but you work for it. I’m not talking about earning your turns. Even the “shuttle” rides are no walk in the park. The earning comes from hike-a-bikes, downed trees and fighting …. [Continue reading]

Shifting

bikepacking.net is coming right along. Still much to do to improve and flesh out the site, but it’s looking good so far.

With the site launch, added to the usual TopoFusioning, the scale tipped too far towards qwerty-izing. I still got out to ride everyday, but was pretty focused otherwise. So in the last few …. [Continue reading]

bikepacking.net launched!

I’ve started a new site, bikepacking.net, about a subject that I’m more than a little bit passionate about.

Traveling by bike is such an incredible way to see the world. But day rides can only take you so far. Once you figure out how to be ~comfortable sleeping out on the bike, a new …. [Continue reading]

Plenty of good things going on…

Riding back through the University today I saw the longest line of bike commuters I’ve ever seen in Tucson. True, it was ~9am. True, the temps have dropped lately. But still, it was an awesome sight — a constant stream of cyclists all the way from Campbell to Treat.

Blind Pilot West Coast …. [Continue reading]

SLC

After the CDT trip I spent a few days in SLC, visiting the family and getting out for a few rides.

That’s my dad, arcing a turn on the shoreline trail. In the background is “Hero hill”, one of my all time favorite climbs. We challenged it that day, but both my brother …. [Continue reading]

CDT Chapter 2, Jackson Loop

Mike Curiak and I continue exploring the Continental Divide Trail (CDT).

The original plan was to restart where we left off — Bannock Pass. But given that our daily mileage limped along in the 30’s, we didn’t have enough time to complete the trail as planned — and ride back.

Somehow the plan morphed into …. [Continue reading]

CDT Chapter 1, Lima Loop

I flew to Salt Lake City. My bike was waiting, shipped DHL to my parents’ house. 24 hours later I was in MC’s ‘E’ as we fought Wasatch front traffic, en route to Montana.

Lima, Montana is a classic stop for CDT hikers and GDMBR (divide) cyclists. We were about to become divide cyclists ourselves, …. [Continue reading]

Crazy on the CDT

From walkingcarrot.com:

“Then we met two mountain bikers pushing their bikes up the pass at the headwaters of Meadow creek just northwest of Cottonwood mountain. They started in Lima and are headed to Chief Joseph pass. While we plead guilty to the label of being crazy enough to hike the CDT, the thought …. [Continue reading]
