Spent the morning checking out the dead bobby trail system out by Oracle Junction. Jerry Q was my guide to this emerging riding area. He’s responsible for trimming and naming many of the trails out there.
The trails are rough or nonexistant in places, but it is a great area to spin around in for a morning. BBar has it made living out there. I’m very jealous.
The highlight was Ann’s Can, a nice little rocky climb out of a canyon. The view from the rolling Sunset trail downhill shows no sign of human development. It’s easy to forget you’re close to Oracle RD, Saddlebrooke, Catalina, et cetera.
The amazing things is that my tires are still holding air. I lost count of the number of cactus pieces that ended up attached to and rotating on my tires.
At the end of the ride I couldn’t resist a good challenge–riding up the drainage channel that Jerry says 1 in 4 endo on in the downhill direction. My first try ended in disaster–my bike would not stay in granny gear.
After 10 minutes of trying to coax my bike to stay in granny, I finally had something to pedal solidly against. With each attempt I made it further and further up the ramp. It didn’t make sense to me how I could ride up half of it, then fail on the rest. All my momentum was long gone before I made it anywhere near halfway.
In the end I think it was the doubt that it could be done that made me give up as I got higher. Slowly as I realized I could keep going I would make it further and further until I finally rode it all.
Not that impressive of a feat, but a fun challenge nonetheless. There is a video of me riding it on the SDMB site
