Today we spent out on the closed and burned Green Mountain trail. A group of 12 was out to help reopen this incredible trail.
The work was fun and a stark contrast to working on desert trails. I spent the first part searching and hauling large rocks while others of the crew sent giant ones tumbling down the mountain onto the trail. We were rebuilding a short drainage section that had eroded away.
Chuck “rock moster” Boyer kept sending BFRs down the trail. A few of them stuck and ended up working rather well. We found logs and cut and pounded stakes into temporary retaining walls. The best part was throwing the sledgehammer to bust away some rock to widen the trail a bit.
The only problem with the work is that we had a few too many people so often people were just standing around. The area was tight and steep so shuffling around was a problem. There just wasn’t enough trail and work to go around.
It was nice to get out there and survey the fire damage. Green Mountain is a very nice and very challenging trail. It was nice even when standing around. Views into the San Pedro valley are now available left and right because most of the trees are burned away. Still, if I’m relaxing along a trail I’d rather not do it with 12 other people in the area.
