Network Settings
« on: December 20, 2009, 07:53:09 PM »
Anybody willing to share their network settings. I have been looking for the sweet spot with some pretty good results, but I can tell settings for the make network option is an art.

Anybody willing to share reduction and contraction settings that they have found to be particularly effective?

My best answer is.... that it depends!  :)

The biggest factor, I think, is the amount of error in your data.  If you have pretty good data you may be able to get away with smaller values.  Lots of noise?  Gotta crank it up to get what you want.

I generally find I need to use values a little higher than what the defaults are in the software.

Also, sometimes I prefer a more simple network, so I crank up the 'contraction' slider all the way, regardless of how accurate I think my GPS data is.

Thanks Scott. That makes sense.

For example the network I was trying to make is in a park here in Orange County where there are lots of trails and variations, all near one another. My data is pretty good (points ever second was WAAS) -- I actually got settings that worked to get all the trails -- I cranked the reduction and contraction down to almost nothing.
