Author Topic: Unable to download tracks from Etrex Vista C (Read 7423 times)

Since I upgraded the SW to ver3.20, I get this error message:

"Error initializing COM/USB port, check for other programs using port and that the device is connected and turned on"

I think the previous version of SW I was using was 3.12. I use the USB cable and never had any problems downloading tracks from this Etrex Vista C. I have the SW loaded on two computers and get the same error message. Any suggestions?

Hmm. A bit of code has changed in 3.20 with respect to the GPS transfer.

My main GPS is a Vista CX, and it's still humming along (downloading near daily rides from it).

A few things to try:

1) go back to 3.12 (I can always email you the installer if you don't have it anymore) and see if it works

2) can you get Mapsource to download tracks from it, or to "see" the GPS in general?

3) email your topofusion.log file to support@topofusion.com and we'll take a look.

1. I do not have 3.12 so maybe you could send to me and I'll try it. I downloaded 3.31 and nothing has changed.
2. Mapsource does not find any "Devices" when I try to Transer/Receive From Device. It comments that I should have the interface option on my GPS set to "Garmin" or "Host". I don't see any options like that in my GPS. My computer recognizes the new USB device when I plug the GPS into it.
3. I'll try to find the log file and e-mail.

Thanks for the log.

We've sent you v3.12 to try. Since it doesn't work in Mapsource I suspect something is wrong with windows (USB), or the GPS itself.

Make sure that the GPS is set to "GARMIN" interface mode in the settings menu. (The other setting is NMEA).

No difference with v3.12. I scanned through the entire Vista C manual and looked through everything on the GPS. I do not find anywhere to select the interface mode. Can you give me the exact path from the main menu? I can not find it within the Setup options.

Are there some specific USB drivers I need other than what Mapsource loads? I re-loaded the Mapsource Trip & Waypoint Manager SW that game with this Vista C and Mapsource still does not find any Device.

I went to the Garmin site and downloaded the USB drivers and latest firmware and everything seems to work again. Thanks for your help.

Glad you got it figured out. Sounds like there was likely a problem with the Garmin USB drivers. Or possibly the firmware update reset the settings.

I would have suggested the drivers next, but I was out riding all yesterday (11 hour ride!). Cheers.
