TF 4 stopped downloading tiles
« on: July 09, 2010, 08:36:18 PM »
I'm not sure what might have happened, but tonight TF 4 stopped downloading tiles. Topo, Color, B&W, Utah alt, Landsat, anything. Previously laoded tiles display correctly.

Tjhis is XP fully updated and was working fine. WHen TF fails to download I see it hang after closing in the task manager as not responding. Not sure if that has any relation to what is going on. The load tiles button is depressed on the toolbar.

I don't know where to go for ideas as to figuring how to determine why the tiles are suddenly failing to load.

Ideas appreciated.

I'm having the same issue. TF reports that the firewall needs to set to allow access to the internet, and to configure a proxy server. I have the firewall configured as such and do not have a proxy server.

I've noticed that if TF is opened with a tile set other than Topo, (set in a previous instance) the downloads take place, but very slow. Also running an updated xp machine.

The new maps are very nice.

I'm not sure if the hanging on shutdown is actually an issue. I may have just not been waiting long enough for TF to close.

Today when I launched it, TF began downloading some color tiles, then stopped. As I switched to B&W to see if those might load, it had popped up the error about a firewall, though I haven't used anything ever but the Windows XP firewall here, and don't have it blocking anything. I got the same errors when I disabled the Windows XP firewall and tested again. Re-enabling the Internet download didn't get things going again. And the Utah alt tilesets, which come from a different server than MSR and also the Landsat aerials, weren't downloading either.

So not sure exactly how to find out what might have changed, here or out on the Internet?

TF was working flawlesly earlier and popping up tiles smoothly and fast. I don't think anything has changed here on this end.

Ideas appreciated... and thanks in advance.

I take that back about TF closing correctly after the recent issues...

I allowed it to close, and watched the entry for it disappear from the Windows XP task manager, but when I went to shut the machine down, I got a message from Windows that TF was running and unresponsive. I had to OK a forced shutdown of the TF process and the shutdown went ahead uneventfully. This was after seeing nothing of TF in the task manager. So there must have been one or more threads of it still running somewhere?

Is there a que that TF keeps and retries to download tiles it needs from the last time? Or is it somehow failing to grab tiles from another source after the first source it needs fails?

I thought I tried selecting Landsat as the displayed tileset and relaunching TF, but I'll test that again. I was thinking that perhaps it might be hanging on downloading topo or B&W imagery from MSR maps and then not looking at other servers.

Kind of out of ideas, but looking for advice.

It does look like a few servers are slow today.  Color aerials seem to be sluggish.  In general, the myTopo server is a little slower than MSRMaps, but it's well worth the wait, IMO.

I think I am seeing the same issue... I loaded a few color aerials, and now the rest of the tilesets seemed to be stalled out.  It's definitely caused by the server issue, but TF is supposed to handle it more gracefully.

I will keep looking into it.

Ah, the NASA server is not responding:

http://onearth.jpl.nasa.gov/

That can wreak some havoc with other tilesets since TF continually downloads elevation data, regardless of what map mode you are in.  It still should not be killing all downloads or causing the software to hang, but it's definitely an issue.

Landsat will definitely not load.  I'm getting myTopo maps just fine.  But no MSRMaps!  That server also appears to not be responding.  So I think it's just bad timing.  I'll keep looking.

I spoke too soon. MSRMaps is fine, but the NASA server continues to be out.

Will see if I can get an update from the server admin.  Thanks for the patience.

Server is back!  See if you get better downloading now, overall and let us know if you're still having issues.

I just upgraded to 4.0 & I can't get any tile sets to DL. Vista/XP/linux multiboot Vista is running the 4.0, but 3.97 on XP won't DownLoad either. Firewall is set to unblock for both

Yep, looks like the same server issues are cropping up again.  MSRmaps.com is not responding at all.  NASA is up (landsat and 3d should work fine), color aerials sluggish for some locations.

myTopo is working fast for me.  Yet another reason having another topo map provider is very nice.

Most likely things will be working better by tomorrow.  Thanks for the patience.

Actually, myTopo is giving bizarre, inconsistent data at my location (37.52067N, 121.84286W).  Multi-colored tiles that don't match up with each other.  Not useful...

Hmm, attached is what I get.  Something must be amiss on your TF.  Likely a graphics card issue.  Try updating your video drivers, or let's look at the TopoFusion.log file and see if there are any errors listed there.

I'm going to start a new topic for this, since it's not directly related to tile downloads (which seem to be working today!!)
