no time data...magellan explorist
« on: July 13, 2008, 10:22:45 PM »
i've been using TF with a magellan sportrack for several years now.
i like getting the time information like how long the track is, max and min speeds, up and down time, etc.  but i recently go a magellan explorist.  took the unit for a test ride on my bike today.  figured out you have to save the tracklog into a file in order for TF to open it.  so up comes the track but there is all this missing data, you know this calculated file information.  hard to believe that the unit would not be saving this timestamp information like the older unit.  am i doing something wrong here?

thanks

Sorry about the delay - we have been out traveling by bike and away from computers.

There should be time info there for sure.  Also elevation.

Can you email the track file you are loading to support@topofusion.com and we will take a look?

Thanks and sorry about the issue.

I have a Magellan GSMap 60CSx.  My expereince is that is you save the track log on the device (for instance where you are away from your PC and wish to save multiple individual tracks) and then transfer you lose all of the time data, whereas if you transfer prior to saving on the device you get the time data.  I don't know whether this can be altered but I'm unable to find a way to do so.

You are right -- that is a "design feature" of almost all Garmin units.  When you "save" a track you lose the time data.  There are some (questionable) reasons why they do this, but for better or worse we have to live with it.

So it is best to download from the active log.  Remember that the active log is still split into different tracks (if you turn off / on the GPS it will be split).  And when you download the track in TopoFusion you will see each track split in the "merge tracks" dialog.

So, there's really no reason to use save tracks, except as a track area to upload tracks to (for navigation in the field).

Hope that helps.

nick is talking about a garmin unit right? not magellan.  before i learned how to save a tracklog with my magellan explorist, i brought it home with the active tracklog and tried to upload to the computer with TF just like i always do with my magellan sportrack.  but it wouldn't work.  in fact, there is a couple lines of text in the gps dialog box in TF that says you have to save the track on the explorist unit, then you can simply open the file.

so is what your saying also take place on the magellan: that after saving active tracklog, all the timestamps are stripped away so the data is just X,Y,Z?

so then, maybe there is a way to upload the active track from an explorist so the time calcs show up and everything, like the sportrack

Correct, Nick meant Garmin, not Magellan.

The loss of time data is not a design feature on Magellan units.  The files you import to TopoFusion do have time data in them, it just seems that there is some problem reading it on your files.

There's no way to get the "active log" from the eXplorist units -- they simply don't speak the same protocol that the sportrak units do.  You have to copy the files off the removable hard drive that comes up.

Apologies for creating confusion with incorrect naming of my Garmin unit as a Magellan.  Cheers, Nick

Matt,

I checked out your file and the time data is there for me.

What which version number of TopoFusion are you using?

Thanks.

using version 3.32..just opened up that file again, the second column says 'no time data' and all the other columns are "...."

so when you opened this file, all the time calculations appear?
