FIT files revisited - no waypoints
« on: June 27, 2021, 03:15:06 PM »
This is a persistent issue that I have mostly ignored on a Garmin Epix that I have used for a few years.
The Epix (a discontinued wrist type device) stores its waypoints (aka "locations") in a "Locations.fit" file in a "Garmin\Locations" folder.
Both of the following result in an empty TF entry,  i.e. no waypoints  (and no error messages).
  (1) Using the TF GPS transfer function - "Download waypoints,"
  (2) Directly reading/loading "Locations.fit" as a file.

In contrast,  FIT files for tracks (aka  "Activities") can be read/downloaded into TF either way.

This missing waypoint issue seems to be specific to TF.  Other GPS software and/or FIT file conversion utilities I have played with seem to handle the waypoints (or the Locations.fit file) from the Epix as expected.

Interesting.  I'll admit that the FIT input/output routine is not super robust.  It needs some work.  Very complicated API, unfortunately.

Might be able to fix this issue though. Thanks for reporting it.

Output?
Is there supposed to be a FIT output function? I see 13 format options when doing a file "save as," but FIT is not one of them.
(Input has 14 options, including FIT)
I would LOVE to have FIT output capability. It would avoid some kludgy workarounds that I presently use with the Epix.
Being able to download, edit and/or resave FIT files directly to/from the device (especially without using other software) would be VERY useful.

See http://topofusion.com/forum/feature-requests/fit-write-support/msg114967/#msg114967

Thanks

Thanks

I'm assuming that my old Garmin Forerunner 310xt handles waypoints ("Locations") in a similar manner. Manually inputting them is a pain. Being able to upload them directly from TF would be really great! And downloading saved Locations too.

(To be filed under "stuff I thought I knew, but ignored and forgot") ;)
The situation may not be quite so simple with Garmin devices that use a "locations.fit" file
On my Epix, it appears that the "locations.fit" file is only a mirror of the waypoints/locations that are saved somewhere in the memory of the device.
That file is automatically rewritten/updated  by the device.
But, conversely,  the "saved location" memory is NOT affected by actions on the file, including deleting or replacing it.
As far as I am aware, a "saved location" can only be removed by manually accessing the "locations" list via the device itself.
Fortunately, there is a "delete all" option at the end of the list.

FULL "FIT" file compatibility would still be desirable, including the specifc ability to "download waypoints," which I presently cannot do via TF. It appears that simply reading the "locations\locations.fit" file would accompish this.
