Track Contains No Elevation Data
« on: August 13, 2012, 03:28:51 PM »
I'm trying out the demo version of TF and have successfully drawn tracks and generated elevation profiles for several legs of an upcoming backpack trip.  Today I drew a track for a different hike (using the map drawing tool).  However, when I profile the track I get a flat profile, indicating there is no elevation data for the track I mapped.  I tried adding elevation data via the Climbing Analysis dialogue, but I get an error message saying "some elevation data is missing from TF's local cache".  How can I add elevation data to my track, and why wasn't elevation data generated when I originally drew the track?

Hi,

Are you still in the US (and below 60* latitude) ?  TF cannot download elevation data for extreme latitudes.  It may also have been that due to network or server hiccup it couldn't get elevation data in time.  I would open up the program again and give it a try.

It's usually fast enough that by the time you draw it (and especially when adding elevation after) it will be there.

If you're still having issues, give me a rough coordinate and I can check it out.

Best,

Scott

I have tried again this morning and I'm still not able to get elevation data.  I'm also still getting the error message when I try to add elevations to the track using the Climbing Analysis dialogue.  The rough coordinates for the track are 34.228N, 117.666W.  It's a track in the San Gabriel Mountains NE of Los Angeles.  I've attached my gpx file titled 'sunset peak.gpx'.

I presume the lack of elevation data is why I can't view 'shaded relief' on the US Topo tile, or '3D' either.  The MyTopo tile shows as a shaded relief, but the 3D view is still totally flat.

Strange, the elevation data loaded instantly for me.  (File attached).

Are you able to download new map tiles elsewhere?  Could be a firewall issue.

Another thing to try is go to Options->Preferences.  Change the map data directory to something new (perhaps create a new folder) so that you reset your map cache.  That might give it a fresh start and successfully load the elevation data you need.

Just want to report that the file you sent me works fine.  I created another track with that file open and the elevation data was generated.  I loaded the TF Demo on a different PC and successfully generated tracks with elevation data.  So, I tried opening my original file that did not have elevation data (using the original PC) and the elevation data was there.  I presume I somehow reset the map cache...although I did not change the map data directory. Nevertheless, TF appears to be working fine now. Thanks for your help.
