Multiple Tracks
« on: April 01, 2013, 06:09:28 PM »
I recently switched to a Mac and can't get ExpertGPS to function properly under Parallels or VirtualBox so I'm trying Topofusion. So far it's working fine but I'm having trouble figuring out if it'll do what I need.

I'm a trail coordinator and need to visually track progress during the maintenance season. Within ExpertGPS I've defined different track styles indicating unmaintained, partially maintained, maintained, etc. When I open the same GPX in Topofusion I don't see any of that. I also can't see if there's a way to take a single track and split it into multiple tracks that I can define with their own colors, etc.

Is this type of functionality possible?

Hi Kudzu,

Sorry about taking so long to reply here.  It slipped through the cracks somehow.

You probably already figured this out, but TF supports per track attributes like you describe.  Saved into GPX format just as ExpertGPS does it (the extensions were defined by ExpertGPS's creator).  To get the track attribute dialog right click on a single track in the map window and choose "Track Properties."  Color, width, alpha and pattern type are all there.

Thanks for the question!

No worries, Scott. I'll have to play with it some. I only have a single track opened that's 153 mi. When I change the color a small portion changes but not the entire track. Along these lines can I create styles rather than just picking colors for each track?

But this leads me to part two. How do I slice and dice a track single track into multiple tracks so I can edit them? For example, I'm responsible for a little over 100 miles of trail. Suppose I want to break that track into four separate tracks so they're identified for each section leader. And does this mean that they have to be broken into separate files? With ExpertGPS a single GPX can contain multiple tracks.

Kudzu,

If you want to change the color of all tracks in a file, you can use the File Properties dialog.  If you just want to do one track, use Track Properties.  Maybe you have some overlapping sections?

In TF you can have multiple tracks as well.  But in the file list below, the stats are for all tracks.

The scissors tool will snip one track into two, leaving them still in one file.  Try it out.
