making maps for a public domain brochure (copyright issue?)
« on: January 27, 2012, 08:24:10 AM »
Hi
I am looking to make a brochure that will contain maps of trails for bikes and hikers. The brochure will be distributed free in the local community. There is no intent of making profit from the brochure. There may be advertisements to cover the cost of producing the brochure. Will I be violating any copyrights to take screenshots of maps containing my trails from Topofusion?
I think some of the maps that are government issue, so wouldn't they be free of the copyright issue?
What do others do to stay within the law on the copyrights of maps?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Most of the maps in TF (as of the current version) have no restrictions for duplication (even for commercial purposes).

EXCEPTIONS:

myTopo - no duplication is allowed, even non-commercial.
Open street maps (and all derivatives) - License is cc-by-sa: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

Hope that helps.
