Terraserver not responding
« on: July 11, 2009, 03:59:16 PM »
Terraserver is not responding well as of this afternoon.  We've had reports of sluggish map download since yesterday.  Most likely these are just normal network hiccups, or they are updating/changing hardware.  I'm sure the downtime will be minimal, but we'll keep you informed here.

Thanks for the patience.

Looks like Terraserver is still intermittently up and down.  It is currently giving a 'server busy' message, but was up earlier today.

Terraserver back up

Issues are definitely resolved now.  Terraserver has been serving tiles very rapidly for the past several days.

Again, thanks for the patience.

Is Terraserver the only place to get free access to the USGS topo maps? In a few parts of California, the maps are in bad shape or not-existant for the 2m and 4m views. I've noticed other websites do have those USGS topos and are accurate

Terraserver is the only one I know of with completely free access to USGS maps, and yep there are some issues especially in California.

I'll be there is a CA-only server with topos on (I've found a few servers for other states).  It'd be worth a look.

Terraserver is responding very slowly right now, if at all.  I've been able to get a few tiles, but it's been pretty limited for the last few hours.

We'll keep monitoring it.

Looks like UC Davis has them on line. Is there a way to redirect within TF?

They also have a way to view them online too...

Unfortunately their server doesn't appear to be WMS (an open standard for web mapping).  If you can find a WMS server it can be added to TopoFusion.

Went on this morning and it is SCREAMING so I am downloading 2 meter topos for my entire state

They must have done some incredible upgrade because my new computer has a 2.2 ghz intel core duo processor and 4 megs of RAM and I am maxing out the CPU and using half of my RAM because I have changed my tilesets to only download the 2meter topos and have zoomed out as far as I can to allow download and am scanning with the arrow keys to pull all the tilesets.
