Beta Testing / Edge 705 no communication
« on: May 14, 2008, 07:00:33 AM »
Running version 3.32:  Topo says unable to initialize COM/USB.  Hints on making it work?   Training Center reads tracks OK.  Garmin Communicator OK.  Substitute Edge 305 on same cable and it works, so that kills "other programs" warning.

Hmm!

I just tried it on a flat (no elevation) file, and it worked OK.

Did the numbers stay the same in the Climbing Analysis menu?

Is this repeatable, or maybe just a problem accessing the elevation server?

I am wrong on one point.  The file is updated with straight DEM which is nearly the same as the GPX data.  The Climbing Analysis reflects the DEM data and the slidebar settings.  The file is not updated with the custom settings.

I thought I had produced GPX files in the past with the result of custom settings.  {confused}

TF marks the file as modified but the original altitude data remains in the file.

Feature Requests / Photo Placement by Coord?
« on: January 18, 2007, 07:18:15 AM »
If I'm making a guided route the instructions can change with each lap (or the return leg), the same point or nearly the same point may be seen multiple times.  The instructions change with each lap, the "time" of the waypoint is to help job the memory of the route creator (lets see.. lap1, lap2?, North, South?).  I suppose the sequencing of the file names in the camera could help but, time nails it.  OH NO!  Can you see what's next?  THE TRACK POINTS MAKE A VECTOR!  LOL

Archived Support / Wanting to merge tracks
« on: January 15, 2007, 10:14:11 PM »
When I download the active log from my Garmin it may be broken into multiple tracks (from signal loss?).  Topofusion gives the option to merge tracks into one file which I do since the trip was continuous.

I have found that Garmin will save the active log onto the data card (MicroSD).  {That data preserves the time unlike the save into the built-in memory (loses time).}   I can then insert the card into a USB card interface and copy the log to the PC.

Unfortunately the log is divided into tracks just as it was when Topofusion retrieved the active log via USB.  How can I merge the tracks in the copied log?

Feature Requests / Photo Placement by Coord?
« on: January 15, 2007, 08:42:28 PM »
It's an easy way to add waypoints to a GPX file and to sync with a photo.   I pack the GPS safely away in a backpack and keep the camera handy and voila - two tasks done with one shutter buton.  Detail .. The site geoladders.com lets users create routes for GPS particularly Garmin Edge's.  Geoladders.com uses waypoints as markers for gallery photos or directional information.  (It's up to the user to figure out what his waypoints were for, hence the sync problem)  edit - Timetag because you may be returning on a leg.

The new photofusion that creates waypoints for the photos is just what I have been looking for!  I hope the waypoint will also have a time tag.  Is it available in beta yet?

Archived - Feedback and Comments / Tracks won't shade
« on: September 25, 2006, 10:01:18 AM »
When clicking with the profile tool, the profile window shows the shading but the main window shows a solid wide track.  When I click on a second track it goes solid and the first track then shows shading (but not the one I selected).   Also when turning off display of track (check box) the track persists on the screen.  (v 2.95)

Archived Support / Looking for % grade tuning/accuracy

Grade calculations on GPS tracks are, in general, not very accurate.  This is mostly due to errors in the elevation dimension, compounded by errors in 2D position.

Believe it or not, we already do some amount of smoothing to get more accurate results.  It was even worse before.

The grade should not necessary increase as you progress on a climb.  The actual elevation number has nothing to do with it.  Climbs can get less steep as they go on, right?

Also, grade is defined with respect to 2d distance, not terrain distance.  Rise/run.

All that said, I'd like to make grade numbers more useful/accurate, too.  Perhaps it's time for an option to turn a more aggressive smoothing algorithm on.

The tuning needs some confidence factor for the elevation.  The precision (accuracy when calibrated) of the barometric elevation of the 76CSx is very good.  With barometric data the smoothing needs to be less aggressive and more trusting!

The comment was referring to starting from level (0%) as one ascends there IS a range in which the average grade will increase (assuming the range of averaging is more than 2 points).  The program's behavior seems close to random.

I agree on grade definition, I computed run by using the distance from the playback as the hypotenuse.   But this must be circular, isn't altitude input to TF's distance calculation?   I suppose I could get run directly from lat/long.

I had a bike ride that featured climbing a very steep hill.  The speed was very slow.  The % grade reported on playback didn't come close to the actual.   It had numbers as low as 3.6%.   My calculation shows a grade of ~25% (using the altitude from the GPS file and the distance from playback).  I assume that distance is the distance across the surface not the projection onto a flat plane.

When playing back and stopping at each step/point during the climb, the % grade should at least be monotonically increasing with each point (more altitude) but it doesn't.

Did my very slow speed cause TF to throw out points?  Even slower speed when projected to level, though some climbing was near 1 ft/sec vertical.

I am sure to be tuned in.   I hope you take take data exported from Polar Precision SW or directly from the HRM (IR/USB).  BTW On browsing Polar I see that they have a developer's kit.   '<img'>

What is the future of Heart Rate data in Topofusion (if any)?  I see that Motion Based will accept and report on HR data from the Forerunner 301.Agua Dulce

NB The site is so slow every time I check it!

I would like to include HR data in Topofusion.  Ideas: Another data field in playback, summary column, input to difficulty/effort, or "pulse" the rider in playback.

A related question is there a GPX standard for HR data?
When I export the MB data to GPX there is no HRM data in the file (did I miss it?).

GPX is important to me because I have a Polar HRM and a Garmin GPS so my problem is to merge the two into a GPX file (sync on time) and pass it on to Topofusion.  (If you accelerate the development beat MB at their own game - they shun Polar)
