TopoFusion Pro / Merging into an existing network reduces data
« on: September 18, 2008, 07:35:01 AM »
Thanks for the detailed post.  I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

First thing I notice is that you said you were selecting the files you wanted and doing a network analysis.  That's not the way the feature works -- it combines all files that are currently loaded and enabled.

That might be what you meant by selected.  Just wanted to check.

There should be nothing wrong with re-using an existing network as input into a new network procedure.  It's designed to work that way.

Otherwise, I think your understanding of things is correct.  The number of points should only increase when you add new data.  The only exception is with "contractions" when the algorithm deletes short, insignificant spurs.  But unless you had a lot of that (very doubtful) that's not it.

I just experimented making a network that came out with ~10,000 points.  I then added a 7000 point overlapping track to it and the new network came out at 16,300 points.  That's about what is expected.

I can always take a look at your files if we can't figure it out just talking it out.

I don't think anything changed in the network code from v3.38 to v3.41.  A lot changed around v3.35 and such.  One thing that did change in 3.41 is the GPX output routine, but I'm pretty sure it only increased the file size (more fields).

Archived Support / Where are downloaded tiles stored
« on: September 14, 2007, 09:59:11 AM »
Hi,

The files are:

mapindex.dat
Maps0.dat
Maps1.dat
...
MapsX.dat

Each mapsX.dat file can be up to 650 mb large before another file is started automatically.

Copying those files into the "map data" directory will transfer them to a new computer.  The default map directory is simply c:\program files\topofusion.

Glad you enjoy the program.

That's odd.  How about google earth?  If you need to get an image in, you could always do a screen grab to .jpeg, then import that to TopoFusion as a user map.

One place is the "other" Terraserver:

http://www.terraserver.com

They've got some high resolution aerials for sale (to download).

Another is http://www.topozone.com.

There are others, as well.  Have a google search or two.

Not directly through the program, but you could purchase aerial photos (individual, large scale ones) and use the "user calibrated maps" function to add the images to TopoFusion.

See:

Hi,

Central Maine, right?

If you switch to the Aerial 64M tileset and pan around you can see that most of the state is covered, but a few fingers, including the coordinates you specified, have missing maps.

95% of the country is covered by aerials, but that 5% can be pretty annoying sometimes.  Unfortunately there's not much we can do about it.

Sometimes they do update areas and add imagery, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Archived Support / Magellan crossover
« on: September 02, 2007, 06:57:56 PM »
I'm not familiar with how the crossover works -- is it USB or serial?

If it's USB then you don't transfer tracks (in either direction) using TopoFusion's GPS functionality.  You just export your data as .log file and simply copy it to the appropriate directory (where other .log files are).  Then it'll show up on the GPS.

Let me know if that isn't it.

Archived Support / Magellan crossover
« on: September 01, 2007, 08:09:17 PM »
What are you trying to do with it?  Does a crossover store a tracklog (breadcrumb trail) in the GPS that can be downloaded?

I assume it hooks up by USB cable, is that right?

If so, you don't get the GPS to communicate (eXplorist style), you just open the drive that comes up under windows and copy the files, which TopoFusion can read.

If you're trying to do live tracking / moving map, you need to set it to Magellan/NMEA and make sure the baud rate is correct, probably 4800 baud.

Hope that helps, if not feel free to ask more.

Archived Support / Datum Sets
« on: October 24, 2005, 11:14:41 AM »
Map datums describe the ellipsoid model used for reference on the planet.  Any given map with coordinates must be in a given datum.

What's the problem you're having with the 2,8,32 topo tilesets?  Are the colors messed up or what?

The photofusion time offset is mostly just to tell which timezone you're in.  The GPS data is always timestamped with GMT, but your camera will be whatever your timezone is, or whatever you have it set to.

I'm not aware of any BLM maps

Actually, the JPL Landsat images are available for pretty much the whole world.  Download the TopoFusion demo, Select Goto->Goto Coordinate and enter lat/lon 57 and 9, then select LandSat 256M from the dropdown box in the upper right.  Then you can zoom in and look at the landsat images for Denmark.  These maps are not very high resolution though, only up to 16 meters per pixel, and there are no topo maps available.

Could you please download http://www.topofusion.com/TopoFusionDemo-update2.61.zip and overwrite your TopoFusion.exe and GPSMaster.ocx with those contained in the zipfile?

It appears we left out some error handling code that is usually there.  This will not likely fix it, but you should get a message with a more informative (to us) indication of where the problem is.  We'll be able to track it down from there.

This can be done using the "profile/merge" tool, it's the fifth one from the left.  Click on your first track, then shift-click on your second track.  Then right click to save it as a new track.  You also have the option to reverse the last leg (so that the track goes the right direction).

I'll have to do some research into the exception handling.  I'm just confused that windows doesn't give you any error at all.  I wonder if the XP "application log" (see the event log view) says anything about it, it usually logs whenever a program crashes.

Archived Support / GPS data does not match tile set
« on: April 29, 2005, 12:53:39 AM »
The garmin protocol specifies the transfer datum (WGS84 I believe) and we believe that we handle it correctly.  Unfortunatley, we've notices that some sets of tiles are offset on TerraServer.  A good example is near Tucson where TopoFusion first starts up.  As you keep moving east you can actually see where the break is.

We've considered adding some sort of "local adjustment" to bump the tiles (or tracks) by a certain number of meters, but haven't done so, nor figured out how to provide an interface for it.

Ok, got it.  Yeah, the file is seriously screwed up.  It contains a bunch of points as follows:

    <trkpt lat="180.000000" lon="180.000000">

      <time>2005-04-24T15:02:10Z</time>
    </trkpt>

Have you tried the beta?  I'm not sure if we have a 301 on hand to test with.  Unfortunately, the guy with all the gps's is riding the Arizona Trial at the moment, he won't be done for a couple of weeks.  He's also the one who wrote the gps communication code, so it will probably have to wait a bit.  Sorry.

First, note that the "Tile Sets" tab in the options dialog allows you to turn off tilesets, so you only get the ones you want.

In general it is not a good idea to unlink the zoom and tileset.  Consider what happens if one is zoomed out far enough to see an entire state.  What happens if the user wants to see Aerial 1M at this level?  Each tile is smaller than one pixel at this view.

For limited uses, it's a good idea, but that's why we provided the list of checkboxes in the options dialog.

I'm not sure about the history of views.  Do you know of any other mapping program that provides this functionality.  I don't think your web browser saved the state of the scrolllbars such that you can press back/forward to move back and forth through different "view" of the page.  It's an interesting idea.  Right now, the only way to really save your place is to create a GPX file with a waypoint or something there.

Yeah, I understand what you want.  There's no way to do that right now.  If you want it to use smaller tilesets, change the tileset preference to "shrink" in the options dialog.

Archived - Feedback and Comments / Managing Map .dat files
« on: March 28, 2005, 01:43:02 PM »
The images are stored in the order they are downloaded.  So, usually, images near each other  are near each other in the map file.

I don't buy your claim that it takes longer to seek between files that are large in size.  The location of fragments of a file on the hard drive is arbitrary.

The location of an image in one .dat file may be phsically right next to one in a different .dat file.  Or two "adjacent" images in one file may be on different platters in the hard drive, or on different drives altogether (RAID).  Attempting to optimize file layout is pretty fruitless when the access order is not known until runtime, as it is here.

I don't think it would be worth anyone's time or effort to attempt to optimize the file layout.  I once attempted to pre-cache nearby areas of the map, but that effort was for the most part a failure, it simply didn't give much performance boost and just took up a lot of memory.
