Some ideas

Hello, thank you for adding me to the forum.

I was looking for an application to show my photos from my long road trips in the US in 2017 and 18 (nearly 40,000 miles by car) and came across TopoFusion.

The application ticks most boxes and I am considering purchase (although a smidgin expensive for my personal use).

I have a few ideas which would enhance the use for me...

1) when photos are imported via PhotoFusion it would be good to have one or more relevant EXIF/IPTC metadata fields included and available for display alongside or within the thumbnails so that it easier to identify where the photo was taken.

2) when generating a HTML file from within PhotoFusion it would be nice to be able to select the elements required eg I would only generally want the HTML with map and thumbnails and don't need the altitude graph.

For your consideration and comment.

Hi Jeff,

I like the idea of including some meta data in PhotoFusion imports.  What field(s) would you like to see?  I guess it could be a dropdown of a few major ones (there are many!), perhaps.  A couple fields could go into the description or comment field on each waypoint.

On the second point, it sounds like general map export is what you are looking for.  Let me know if not.

Thank you for replying.

When I do the road trips in the US (also in the UK and Europe) I generally locate and drive the Scenic Byways which are a feature of the US road system.  I take lots of photos and by various means record the locations the photos were taken in the IPTC metadata location fields (eg Country, State, City, Location).  Because I get this data from geonames and google and it can be slightly different I also use the IPTC Contact Location fields.  So a subset of those metadata fields, if brought across when importing photos using Photofusion, could potentially be displayed on the photos when related to tracks n Topofusion.

Alternatively the IPTC metadata field Description could be populated by me with other software and if that field was available it would serve the purpose to a large extent.

I have thought of the following workarounds able to be used in Topofusion as it stands:-

1) I could title the photo files with the data required and that would appear in Topofusion and/or

2) I could watermark the photos with the data.

Secondly what I was looking for with the map export is to see the map (usually with photos) on screen or on a printout.  Such a map could also be used as a slide in a slide show to indicate where the other photo slides are located.  Since I wrote this I have realised you have provided an "export current view" function and it gives a .jpg copy of the map with photos which pretty much meets my needs in this area.

Thanks Jeff, for following up and for buying a copy.  It's always great to hear the various uses folks have for the software.

Watermarking is an interesting idea.  Seems like taking one of the location fields and maybe a couple others for PhotoFusion waypoints does make some sense.  Others may find that useful too.  You can change which waypoint field is displayed on the map in TF (so instead of file name it could be the description or comment field).

For now naming the files as you want them is a good idea, too.

Hi Scott, when you say "you can change which field is displayed" do you mean that functionality is available now, or that it could be incorporated in the future?

It's there now -- go to Options->Preferences->Fonts->Choose waypoint text...

So Scott, to get eg the waypoint description to show I have to get the data from the photo into the track file?
