Title: Non-US Mapping
Post by: NickGiles on July 25, 2008, 02:26:31 PM
As an Australian, who also travels a fair bit in Europe I'm obviously keen to see the map coverage improve.  Love the product and the Landsat imaging, but some topo mapping would be great.

Yep - would love to find a public server with Ozi maps, but don't know of one yet.  We have some simulation projects that would find them useful.

Geoscience Australia is the government owned mapping bureau.  They have a 1:250k scale topo product which can be viewed online, but not sure whether there is 'server' related access.  You can see it at http://www.ga.gov.au/mapconnect/

Found something that may be more useful on the same site:

The MapConnect web map can be accessed as a Web Map Service (WMS). WMS is an Open Source standard protocol that produces a map image (GIF, PNG or other format) from a set of simple URL text requests.

Awesome, this looks very likely to work for TF's purposes.  Thanks much for the link!

I will experiment with it and see if we can get it rolling.

Support for that server is now available in v3.41 -- the latest beta.

See the beta forum for details:

Downloaded the new version today.  Works great - glad to see it was a relatively straight forward enhancement.

Cheers, Nick
