Problem with GPS reciever and Topo Software
« on: May 12, 2007, 01:41:48 PM »
Hi,

I just bought one of those Small USB GPS recievers for my Laptop as I could use the portability of the unit. My problem is Topo is not recognizing it. I did Install the Drivers for the Small Unit. Here is a Link to the Item I got on EBay, it is new not used.

What it did was add another Comport #4 In TF It doesnt give me an error when I use Garmin Serial on #4COM but it doesnt show long or Lat, I know the GPS is working as the Light is blinking connectivity. Its like TF doesnt know how to communicate with it? If I Select Magellan I get the same response. If I select the other 2 options Garmin USB or Old Magellan I get an Error about connectivity. Is this something that is fixed in the New beta?

I am willing to Send the Drivers or the Whole GPS unit to you to add. Its one of those Small Units that is perfect for portability.

I am using the 3.0 version

Hi,

Not aware of any problems, but I haven't heard from anyone using this particular GPS either.

So it is a USB GPS, but it emulates a serial (COM) port.  It should work OK.  You'll want the "NMEA/Magellan" setting, and as for baud rate -- I'm not sure but probably 4800.  Maybe the manual indicates what baud rate to set?

If you can't get it to work, I could sure try it here if you mail it.  Would be interesting to try it out.

Option B is to use a program like HyperTerminal to capture the NMEA sentences.  I can make sure it's parsing them correctly.  They might be slightly different for some reason.  A serial port monitoring program would work, too, if you've got that.

Thanks for the feedback on this.  Looks like a handy little GPS to have.

Hi,

Well I TRIED your setting and it Crashes to desktop. I tried 1200,4800,9600 baud. All of them do the same. I would probably be better off just Mailing the unit to you, unless you wanted to get one for yourself?

My logic on this is 1. Small Portable, 2. Can stay connected on Laptop while hiking, 3. Backup incase one went down I have another, 4. Batteries it uses the Laptop power system, 5. The cost $30 is just too good to have another GPS.

Let me know. if you want me to send it just let me know where to.

Address sent.  Thanks for the offer!  Should be able to get it to roll and then you'll be up and running.
