Title: More colored tiles?
Post by: Larry on September 04, 2007, 06:18:10 AM
Hi Krein,

Just browsing on Microsoft's online mapping service  http://maps.live.com/  and I see that they have added more and more 1 meter resolution aerial tiles in color. At least fringes of the hiking and skiing areas around here are now included. The pics look great. Better yet, at one meter res the pictures are "courtesy of USGS" per the statement at the bottom of the map display.

Would this mean that TF should be able to access these images? Sure hope so, at least eventually.

Larry

Thanks for the info.  We'll definitely check it out, and, yes, hopefully get it wrapped into TopoFusion!!

Are those the same images used by Google Earth ? I have a tremendous use of aerial B & W vs color. It'd be simply awesome to have this feature added !

No, these would be different images -- MS vs. Google.

I doubt the 1 meter color images are from the USGS. I think Microsoft just uses that as a default credit line.

The high res color images of the Tucson area were commissioned by the county to monitor development and have nothing to do with the USGS even though it says that at the bottom.

The site maps.live.com isn't the same as terraserver.microsoft.com, the server Topofusion uses for the aerial tiles. However, it appears they may allow 3rd party use as terraserver does.
