I saw that the CalTopo Tiles are being used by Backcountry Pro for Android. Any interest in a adding them to TopoFusion? There are some beautiful tile sets, also on CalTopo.com, including a tiled version of the forest service pdfs.
Thanks!

That site looks like it has some nice map types on it -- thanks for pointing it out. We can definitely look at adding them -- depending mostly on terms of condition and that sort of legalese thing. I will take a look at it and see if any make sense in TF.
Thanks!

Scott - I'm sure you are juggling lots of balls but I am curious if you have had a chance to contact Matt Jacobs (the CalTopo guy) yet and inquire about using the hi-res topo tiles he produced. I know he was working on a way to let his users create KMZ files for use as custom Garmin maps so there would be some feature overlap in that regard.

Hey Joseph,
Good to hear from you. I did get in touch with Matt and he offers licenses for apps to use his maps. He said he'd be OK with a small number of users figuring out how to add CalTopo as a custom TMS service, provided I don't give instructions on how to do that.
So... I need to get the custom TMS ability going in TF...

I'll second this request Scott,
The USFS overlay is much better for road information than Mytopo for Oregon coverage.

Hey guys,
I did get in touch with the CalTopo guy, but his server costs are pretty high. He's charging money to all the apps using his maps.
So, unless we're willing (as users of TF) to pony up some cash, I don't think adding CalTopo tiles is going to happy. Thanks for the interest though. Great maps!

Thanks Scott,
That's a bummer as the FS maps are the most accurate I've found for Oregon.
Is there a way to use GeoPDF files, Or do I need to use User Maps and manual calibrate?

It looks to me like Caltopo has since provided WMS access for subscribers that should work. I am not a Caltopo subscriber (yet?) so don't have the ability to test it but the doc is found here: http://caltopo.blogspot.com/2015/12/wms-and-wmts-using-caltopo-layers-in.html

Very interesting, thanks for the post!
I may have to pony up as a subscriber and try it out. Could be a good option and one that Caltopo can support.
-
I purchased access to Caltopo Pro in order to give this a try but it looks like these tiles are limited to EPSG:3857 projection so I'm afraid it's not going to be as easy as adding a custom WMS server via the interface.
-
Nuts.
What about a TMS subscription service? That's what their default web-based interface uses.
-
Scott,
I should have said EPSG:3857 and EPSG:900913 above though in my limited understanding they are different terms for the same projection.
TMS subscription?? I see Caltopo supports WMTS and KML if that helps. Is TMS also what Gaia GPS is using? I noted that it's not WMS and that's why I went looking for alternative WMS access (already a Gaia subscriber). The point of this exercise, besides learning and gaining access to more tiles, is to get a land management layer that includes AZ State Trust land.
Looking at my network traffic for downloads, I see that several of the Topofusion maps appear to be using something other than standard WMS. I bet this also explains why MyTopo/OpenCycleMap etc. don't show up in the tile download window, right?
I would appreciate the flexibility to use other projections and/or a more flexible interface to servers though I can understand how that might turn into a can of worms.
I'll contact you by mail with more info that can't be shared publicly.
