Can I use the XML back up files from my Forerunner with Topofusion software?

If not, is there some other way to use Garmin forerunner 201 data with Topfusion?

Hi--

No, TopoFusion cannot directly read the .XML from the forerunner logbook. Garmin should have just supported GPX from the beginning since they are both very similar!

Or, go to the "GarminF" yahoo group. There are many knowledgable folks ready to help out on there and I know the issue of XML -> TopoFusion has been addressed before.

To be clear, we don't have any plans of adding code to read the Garmin Logbook XML formats. You can, of course, download any data that is in your forerunner currently to TopoFusion, though.

TopoFusion will directly read from the Forerunner. Just hook up your Forerunner to your PC and do a GPS Transfer. You'll get a table of tracks from the Forerunner. Although, I can't figure out how it decides which tracks to download. I always get less than I know are on the Forerunner. It seems to go back maybe two months? Anyway, once you get the table, I've found it's cleanest to select one track and click on Save Selected.

I believe that the forerunner stores old runs (up to a year maybe?), but it is only summary information--no actual track.

There is only one command that all Apps use to ask the Forerunner for tracks--and it sends everything by default. I don't think there is a bug here, it's just that as you record new tracks gradually old ones get erased (or only now stored as summary information).

Topofusion is EVERYTHING the Forerunner logbook software isn't! Â I now have all the maps and details of my workouts, and its fun. Â

This was puzzling me too. I agree that it it appears the Forerunner is sending the information to TF and, over time, it appears to phase out the old tracks. TF always gets the new tracks and I always just save then newest track with a descriptive name and date.

Is there anyway for me to convert the training data I've uploaded from my Forerunner 201 to Garmin's Training Center into a format that I can use with TopoFusion?

I wonder if G7toWin can convert it.

G7toWin is a program that can read just about any GPS file and save as any other GPS file

I don't work for TF, but from the results of the response to Garmins Logbook, I can pretty much gurantee you that they won't be supporting TC either.

Garmin as of late has started to take on this whole privacy and not wanting to share data with outside developers. SO with these proprietary formats of xml and hst, Garnmin is locking you into their software, or some of the programs that people are writing on their own.

For the commercial deverlopers, it ain't worth their time to try and decipher the crud. Not till Garmin monopilizes the market.

I do use a FR201, and as noted above, I download each run after copmpletion and get the track. If I can't download on that schedule, as say I'm on a multi-0day trip wothout pc access, I don't reset till after the trip is over, then download the one big run and manually break it into the indvivual runs. While I might lose some data, it's better then limiting my runs to the 250 point format they created.

Least, my 2 pence.

that doesn't sound like Garmin, based on two recent selfless features they just added to Mapsource:
1. ability to open and save GML files with Mapsource
2. the new "view in Google Earth" feature, which totally rocks

Garmin's doing a good job at expanding their interoperability.

I agree that Garmin is making steps in the right direction for outside support. I was very happy when they added GPX support since it meant we didn't have to add .MPS support (which would have been a waste of time).

I don't know much about the .hst (training center?) format, and as tdcarter said, I can't say I'd put much of a priority on reading their format. Does anyone know what extra information it contains beyond what a GPX file can store?

When we add heart rate support it might become more of a possibility.

Kuren, what does the "google earth" feature do? Do you have to have the paid version of google earth (that supports GPS) or does it work with the free?

It works with the free version of Google Earth, essentially making it so I don't need to pay for Google Earth

whatever data you have open in Mapsource, you can do View >> View in Google Earth, and Mapsource will save the files in KML (google's xml file type) and then launch Google Earth, and you can view your track, route, and waypoints.
