Importing .txt tracklogs
« on: November 19, 2005, 10:24:49 AM »
I have a number of tracklogs saved as .txt files.  How do I get them into Topofusion?  I tried the File-Open-UTM text file to no avail.

The UTM .txt file read by TF is of a specific format.  Can you post a snippet of your file so we can see what it looks like?

A little reformatting might do it, or perhaps I can direct you to a program that will convert to GPX (such as GPSBabel).

What program created your files?

The particular file I tried was a download.  Here's a copy-paste of everything up to a few sample WP's.  Maybe I need to get rid of all the descriptive elements and individual WP's that precede the actual trackpoints

Ok, that's a completely different and highly detailed text format.

Are you using GPS Utility?  Can't you just open the file with GPSU and then export it as a .GPX file for TopoFusion?

The UTM text files TF reads are like this one (though it will accept some variations) :

I'm a complete newbie allthough I do use NG Topo! software.  I got that file into Topo! quite easily by having Topo! start the tracklog at the first trackpoint.  I do have GPSU installed but have never worked with it.  The format of what you posted looks familiar.  Perhaps Topo! generates that.

BTW, this stuff is very cool!

If I have a tracklog in my gps will it download into TF just as it does into Topo!?

Yep, that's one way surefire way to get data into a program when you can't find a conversion -- upload it to your GPS in one program and download it in the other!

I don't know of a good way to get tracks out of Topo! and into nearly any other program.  They still don't support the GPX format, sadly.

You mean the GPS'll act as a file homogenizer?

Topo will let me save a track in .txt format.  I'll try and convert it in GPSU to the gpx format.
How does the info regarding the datum used at the time of wp collection get into the gpx file?  If the original gps was set to NAD 27 or something weirder, but mine is set to WGS 84 when I go for a hike, then what?

Well, yes, in a way.  The GPS will store it in its own format when you upload, then TF will store is as GPX when you download.

GPSU route might work, too.

Datum shouldn't be a problem.  It doesn't matter what datum your GPS is set to -- it is always sent to the computer (topo!, TF, GPSU) in WGS 84.

Of course any file could be saved as another datum, but GPX files are always WGS 84.

I don't know if you mind me drifting away like this but: I can't load any of my tracklogs (all saved as .txt files by Topo!)into gpsu.  Trying to figure the help file out had led me to this dialogue box but I'm not sure how to arrange the settings for successful importing or if this is even the right thing to try.

And this is the error message I keep getting:

Sorry, I rarely use GPSU, so I will not be of much help.

Good luck.
