Color Aerial Map Mismatched with Other Maps
« on: July 08, 2007, 01:27:54 PM »
I just purchased Topofusion yesterday and have been having a blast playing with it. One question though. The color aerial map is mis-alligned a few hundred feet from the other maps so that my tracks are north and east of where the photo says they should be. Is there a way to fix the allignment?

Thanks,

          - Mike

P.S. The color aerial resolution is absolutely amazing.

Yep, there's the "Correct Map Offset" feature found in the "Window" menu.

Are you in Colorado Springs?  There a preset to fix the systematic terraserver error in all of the color aerials.  If you're somewhere else, I'd love to hear what preset works (and your location) so we can add it to the program.

Thanks.

Hi Krein,

Yup, I'm in Colorado Springs. I live right across the street from Ute Valley Park and I'm fortunate enough to live in a place where there seems to be Color Aerials of the city and most of my regular trails. I hiked Blodgett Peak a couple days ago and you can make out individual trees. The big trails are plainly visible and even some of the tiny single track trails. I was looking at yesterdays Ute Valley Park ride last night and noticed that there was a strange car parked in my driveway so I was teasing my wife about not letting her boyfriend park in my space when I'm at work. Too bad I can't read the license plate :-)

Seriously, is there a way to tell when the aerials were taken? They look quite recent from the surroundings, probably at least within the last couple years. Very cool. I'll try the offset preset tonight and let you know how it comes out.

Thanks!

Funny, I was riding around at Ute Valley yesterday too.  Though I live in Manitou Springs, so I don't get out to Ute much.

Today's ride was:

That's Pikes in the middle.  '<img'>  Definitely an epic.

Yep, the color aerials are something else.  You can check the year on any Terraserver map by going to that spot on www.teraserver-usa.com.  It seems like the color aerials are 2002 or later.

Cheers.

Hi Krein,

Wow! That looks like about a four day ride for me. How long did it take you? I'm not even sure where that trail is. Would you mind emailing me the gpx?

BTW, the Colorado Springs preset worked perfectly. I looked at my Ute Park ride again with follow set, zoomed in close and I could just about see the tiny single track up to the Hilton - technically out of the park but one of the best sections to ride up there. Other trails of course were visible as plain as day. Great stuff, and well worth the $60.

Thanks again,

          - Mike

It's the "Ring the Peak" Trail.

See:

http://www.fotp.com/ringthepeak/index.html

About 80% done, and definitely a kick in the pants.  Includes some of the classic Springs trails like Jones, Bear Creek, Sec 16, Intemann.

GPX file is here:

Ring the Peak GPX

Glad the preset works.  I found that trail on the east side of Ute (I guess to the Hilton) on Sunday.  I agree it's a great little piece of trail and well worth doing.

Wow, so many fun things to do. Too much work. I can't wait to explore some of these cool trails. I have some vacation coming up in a few weeks though. Can't wait.

Thanks,
