offline dems

I'm having trouble consistantly getting dem data to load while offline.
I've set the 3d settings in TF to look for dem files when available and have placed my dem data in the 3dem file and can view 3d maps when looking at 1m maps but when I switch to 4m I usually ( but not always ) get an instantaneous error stating it "...can't connect to the server....".  
whats up with that?

I'm trying to view offline.

Is it a DEM cache issue?   I've tried both extremes of the DEM cache setttings and the tile cache settings and have closed and reopened TF after each setting change.
Does anyone have any Ideas?

What format is your dem data in?  Did you process it via the instructions at: http://www.topofusion.com/3d.php ?

Thanks for the reply Alan, Yeah I saved the file aquired per the instructions on the link you mentioned which specified to save file as " usgs ascII dem " and then place this file in the :

"DEM Directory (set in Options->Preferences in TopoFusion, the program directory by default)."

Which I took this to mean to save the "usgsII dem " in the main TopoFusion .   I was hoping to see something in the topofusion file like a DEM Directory file or something but the only thing in TF like that is a file called "dem data " and thats a data file that won't allow anything being dumped into it.
It was only when I saved that "usgs ascII dem" in the 3dem file that I got it to come up.
so what have I done wrong?

Well I've got it figured out.  The Dem file being dropped in 3DEM had nothing to do with what little success I had but it turned out to be that I hadn't zoomed a large enough area in 3dem before saving as usgsII dem.  
now it works much better.
