In my way of trying to get more bang for the buck, I tried some other software, in the process of that, the geocaching files  (loc.) I downloaded do not open in topofusion, what do I need to do?

TopoFusion can't open .loc files.  You need to convert them to GPX format first.

Open in a program like EasyGPS or ExpertGPS and then export in GPX format.  (Not sure if EasyGPS can do this, but I know Expert can).
