Title: Error downloading from TerraServer
Post by: patrickclemensen on January 07, 2004, 08:58:19 AM
I can't get any of the background images to download- I always get a message saying "TopoFusion is having trouble contacting TerraServer, internet downloading is now disabled."  I'm using the demo if v1.52, and am accessing from behind a firewall if that makes a difference.  Any ideas what I need to change, or what the problem may be?

Your firewall could make a difference.  Do you use a proxy for web browsing?  If so, configure TopoFusion to use the HTTP proxy.  Go to Options->Preferences->Internet to find the proxy settings

That was the problem- Thanks!  Found the proxy settings and now it works.

Hate to bug you again, but now I can't seem to download any waypoints.  The track points download and upload fine, but I can't upload or download waypoints.  When I select "Download Waypoints" on the GPS Communication screen, nothing happens.  When I click "Begin" it grays out like it's starting to transfer, but then just does nothing.  Do I need to have the GPS (basic eTrex) on a certain screen to download the waypoints?

This is strange.  It works with my basic (yellow) etrex, or at least it used to.  I will check it as soon as I get it back (it's loaned out to someone at the moment).  Does it give you an error message after some time?  Or does it just sit there forever?

Well it looks like it was the computer- I tried it on another pc and everything works fine.  I guess something is screwing up the serial port communication.  Only problem is I don't have internet access on the second machine.  Is there any way to download a section of maps or photos and use it offline?

Are both computers on a network?  If so, you can copy the map index and data files generated by TopoFusion to the machine without internet access, and just disable map downloading.

Depending on how big your map data file is already, various ways could work (local network, CD-R, 1.32e6 floppies, zip drive, etc).

On the troubled machine, is any other program using or attempting to use the serial port?  I'm thinking of things like PDA software.

They're not networked, so a CD-R sounds like the easiest way.  I did have a PDA sync software, but took it off and restarted and the connection 'sort of' worked- I could download the tracks but not waypoints.
Thanks for the help.
