24 or not to four?

Some awesome rides lately on the Behemoth and B-29. Both bikes are very different but very fun to ride. Unfortunately I’m having shoe and other gear problems, so things aren’t really hunky dory. I’ve been spending a lot of time experimenting with various things — bars, grips, shoes, lights, forks, etc. The results are sometimes hard to fully digest. The good part is that testing involves tons of riding, even if some of it is with ‘negative’ results.

Well, decision time is fast approaching on the 24 hours of the Old Pueblo. I’ve wanted to do this race solo for years, but for some reason I just can’t motivate myself to a high enough level each year. This year I thought it would work out, but as it grew closer my mind was just on other things. I didn’t get in the ~12 hour rides I needed to, but I could always wing it. The potential dust on the course (very little rain lately) was enough to give pause. Several veterans of the course have recommended dusts masks to me. With my asthma, dust is never a good idea. I guess that’s one reason I like to do races solo or with only a handful of racers. Throw in problems with my feet, lights and the alternate which is a trip to St. George to visit my family and ride Gooseberry with Mike Curiak and friends, and, well, you can guess what decision I’m coming to.

I really love Todd’s races and would love to support them (that’s why I do the mapping for free), but I guess a 24 solo attempt will just have to come later.
