Quiet Mornings

It’s heating up in Tucson, which is generally bad. But new opportunities are also becoming available: early morning riding. Nothing really compares to quiet desert mornings.

I pedaled the standard ‘suburban assault’ road+trail ride this morning. The elder residents of the foothills were out enjoying the morning. I love surprising them with a greeting. …. [Continue reading]

Montana Marron

The v1.4 beta has been released; send us an email if you would like to test out the new features.

It’s strange how enjoyable something can be when you have been deprived of it. The absence, the longing and the suffering add new meaning to a perhaps commonplace activity or opportunity.

So it was today, …. [Continue reading]

Still Another 50 Years

More trail construction on the 50 year trail today. This time it was a 0.5 mile re-route around a wash/archeology site. We had a small but good crew–everyone was there to work, so things went quickly.

A few good decisions were made about the trail. We generally tried to keep people on the rocks, …. [Continue reading]

On the Trail

Just returned from riding around in some of the suburban washes/trails. We also tested our skills at the Richard “Dick” McGee trailhead along the way.

I always get interesting comments from people on the trail. “Bob, let’s watch this guy ride this trail; Go, go, go, he’s going to ride the stairs!” Then I proceed …. [Continue reading]

50 More Years

My computer has been resurrected. The power supply burned itself out so now I have a new one. And I learned that P4’s require an extra power cable to the motherboard. Don’t ask me how I qwerty-ized without it for 4 months.

I went out with M-R Sadow this afternoon to the 50 year area. …. [Continue reading]

50 Year

Spent the morning putting tool to earth out by the 50 year trail. We were building two new sections of trail, including a link-in to the old Great Pumpkin race course.

Of course, we’re only building singletrack that most would call ‘sweet’ (read easy). We had a few debates over sections being too hard …. [Continue reading]

Make Me Squeal

Phoenix, the squealer. Unofficial time trial on National Trail from coast to coast.

Little riding meant I was totally out of shape, both physically and technically. Still a blast to rock through these trails with a bunch of other good folks.

Paula ran all over the place and took pictures of EVERYONE. Pics …. [Continue reading]

Alpha Blended Maps

Here’s a sneak peak at the next update of TopoFusion:

Topo and Aerial Map

This will all be done on the fly (a slider bar will control how much influence each map type has).

We’re setting it up to be as fast as possible, but in general the blending will be done on the fly. …. [Continue reading]

TMP

My chameleon sits waiting for pedals to be turned and wheels spun.

Today I got out to Tucson Mountain Park for an incredible evening ride. I floundered on Tech Pass, both up and down; then flubbed up even easier sections. I was a bit too excited to be out on the trail, at long …. [Continue reading]

Modeling

At last, I’m able to run simulations using statistics from GPS tracks. It took quite a bit of code and some wrestling with the data, but it is working.

We’re looking at the effect of basing trail decisions (which way to go when you get to an intersection) on your route history. Most models …. [Continue reading]

Coati

We’re off to ride and hike down in the Santa Rita’s this morning. It looks like it’s going to be an excellent day.

Coati is staring at me, wanting to play. He’s an insatiable little ball of energy. He bounced right back after his operation (we got him neutered this week). The stray kitten who …. [Continue reading]

2 GB

Though many thought Thursday’s epic was unbeatable, I was on my bike for 10 minutes longer today. I also took along 4 GPS devices, for a side-by-side comparison. I’ll slap a page together on the results when I have a few minutes.

Anyone out there with a ‘maps.dat’ file larger than 2 GB? One user …. [Continue reading]

St. Louis

Back from the midwest, at last. It was just as I remember it–frigid, grey and dilapidated. But I’ll doubt I’ll ever be excited about cities, or flatlands.

I rode the chameleon to school today; the sun was in full force and it succeeded in thawing me. I’m starting to feel alive again.

This week …. [Continue reading]

Presentation

Spent the day working on my upcoming presentation and trying to deal with taxes. Then, Odin and I walked&talked the first couple miles of the Finger Rock trail. It was toasty warm today and the canyon provided a nice respite from the AZ sun.

Based on previous TopoFusion demos / talks I have given, I’ve …. [Continue reading]
